I have upgraded to 36.0.1 and now all my certificates are missing. Where can I import them from?

Chosen solution

Okay, you'll want to open both your old profile folder and your current one.

Old profile folder: Inside Old Firefox Data, you should find at least one semi-randomly-named folder. Typically, there is a dot in the middle followed by the word default, but it could be something else. Double-click into that folder and look for cert8.db. (If there are multiple profile folders, find the most recently updated cert8.db.)

Current profile folder: The easiest way to access this is from inside Firefox. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This will launch your current profile folder in a new Windows Explorer window.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, and then rename the current cert8.db to something like cert8.old.

Copying over: Now you can copy the old cert8.db into the current profile folder, either by dragging from one window to the other, or right-click > Copy on the old file and right-click > Paste in a blank space in the current folder.

When you start Firefox back up again, it should use your old certificates.

Normally, an upgrade doesn't have any effect on your saved SSL certificates. However, if there was a problem during the update or if you clicked the Refresh button to address slow performance, your old settings files may have been moved to the desktop into a folder named Old Firefox Data. Do you see anything like that? If so, we could advise on how best to copy the old cert8.db file into your currently active profile folder in place of the new one.
