The display for gmail is only boxes on one account

more options

On all computers one of our accounts is displayed as a set of boxes instead of text. It is something to do with the account because I have tried it on several computers and the error is the same. I can open my normal account fine on the same computers. How can I fix the account settings (presumably on the server). See attached image showing both accounts open on the same computer at the same time. Thanks in advance.

Chosen solution

Solved with help from your ideas, many thanks. I used IE to generate the images because I was using Firefox with the good account but the appearance was the same in both. Also tested on Chrome, same result. The account had been hacked (or somehow modified) such that several settings required adjustment. I did this by running our two accounts side by side and comparing settings. There were several that needed resetting, the main ones being the language ( it was set to Burmese?), had the wrong default country, and several of the options were changed. Once I had reset these it works fine on all browsers again. Again many thanks for your fast responses and advice.

Are there numbers in the boxes as I can't see that clearly in the screenshot because of the poor resolution?

Missing icons are usually supplied by a font that is downloaded from the server (@font-face) as you might see by little boxes that show the hex code of the characters instead. Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own fonts.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced: [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

You can check the gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled pref on the about:config page and make sure that it is set to true (if necessary double-click the line to toggle its value).

You can open the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer). Check on the Network tab if font or CSS content from some domain(s) is blocked and has a file size 0 (zero). You can check the Net log and the Network log in the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer) to see what content is blocked and has a zero file size (reload the page).

The issue seems to be with the account settings as one account is fine and the other just the boxes. Have attached another image so hopefully better quality, showing all the little boxes are empty. Is there a way to reset all the account settings to a default? I think this would resolve it.

in both of your screenshot, problematic account is displayed in IE, are you sure this is a problem in firefox?

if it is a problem in firefox, I would try to adjust the character encoding, first goto customize toolbar UI, drag the character encoding to the drop down menu, then play with it.
