Why aren't all my bookmarks displayed anywhere at all?

Firefox displays a maximum of 6 bookmarks (5 under "All Bookmarks") and they are not even the most recent. It's been this way since I started using the program two years ago. I've followed the directions about making and finding bookmarks. The only way to use more bookmarks is to use Explorer and copy and paste the URL. Thanks for your help.

Philipp, I've tried and tried to do this, but the instant I click alt or prtsc, the bookmark windows disappear. Paint won't copy anything anyway ("copy" is grayed out). I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if there is something wrong with one of my programs.

I do see that depending on which dropdowns I click, some different bookmarks are displayed. Some of them are the same across menus, though. And some different quantities. Currently, All Bookmarks is showing seven, where before it was five. My webmail is shown in all menus, although I've never bookmarked that one. I just use it every day.

ok, thanks for trying with the screenshot... does this article help you get started with and understanding the bookmarks system in firefox? Bookmarks in Firefox

Thanks for the article. My system doesn't seem to work this way. I can create bookmarks this way, but only 4 show on the drop-down menu on the main page and only 5 on the All Bookmarks page, and 10 on the Recently Bookmarked, which are the 5+5 above. I haven't tried to sort them--why bother? (Besides, I'm afraid they might disappear again.) There are also Google and my webmail, which I haven't bookmarked because I can find them easily.

If you open the Library dialog (Ctrl+Shift+b or "Show All Bookmark") in the left column you should see three different "containers" under All Bookmarks:

  • Bookmarks Toolbar
  • Bookmarks Menu
  • Unsorted Bookmarks

Please check that third category to see whether the missing bookmarks are in there. You can drag items from Unsorted Bookmarks to the Bookmarks Menu.

Single-clicking the "star" icon simply tosses new bookmarks in that category. If you want to immediately put them on the Bookmarks Menu, either double-click the star or single-click it a second time so you can use the edit bookmark dialog.

Alternately, if you add a bookmark either by pressing Ctrl+d or by right-clicking the page and clicking the star on the context menu, then the dialog defaults to Bookmarks Menu automatically and you can just click Done or press Enter.

After re-reading your original post again, I wonder whether you are able to save any new bookmarks at all. If not, the "places" database file that stores both history and bookmarks might be damaged. There are some add-ons to try to repair the database, but unfortunately I don't have the links at my fingertips.

Jscher, the Unsorted Bookmarks is where my second 5 bookmarks land...but I am able to create new bookmarks and move them to the storage on the menu toolbar (with the icon). So I have a total of 14 now... I think the lost ones are lost for good, unless they're lurking somewhere that I can't find them. The main "All Bookmarks" folder contains only menus.

Hi Jenny, when did you lose the other bookmarks? If they never even made it into Firefox in the first place, perhaps the import from your other/previous browser failed. It's not too late to try that again.

This site's Knowledge Base articles describe various procedures. Here's a good place to start:

If your IE import fails or is incomplete, then there is a more manual process where you first export your IE Favorites to an HTML-format bookmark file, and then import that file into Firefox.

Is that what you're looking for?

more options

Hi, no, they disappeared piecemeal as I created others. It's as if only a small number could be kept at one time. I haven't imported any from IE, although I have occasionally copied and pasted a URL from IE without bookmarking.

Can you attach a screenshot?

  • Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot
  • Make sure that you do not exceed the maximum size of 1 MB

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

I hope I've got it right. Tried to attach a screen shot below.

Just to be sure that you understand how it works:

  • Clicking the star on the Navigation toolbar will bookmark the page in the "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder and the star turns blue to show that
  • Bookmarks > "Bookmark This Page" (Ctrl+D) will bookmark the page in the Bookmarks Menu folder (you need to confirm that)
  • "Bookmark This Page" can be accessed via the right-click context menu in the browsing area or via the Bookmarks menu in the Firefox menu button drop down or menu bar (Alt+B)
  • If the URL in the current tab is bookmarked and the star is highlighted blue then click this highlighted star or use "Bookmark This Page/Edit This Bookmark" (Ctrl+D) to edit the properties of the bookmark like name and location and move the bookmark to another folder or remove the bookmark

There are three main Bookmarks folders and bookmarks can only be created in one of those folders and its sub folders.

  • The "Bookmarks Toolbar" folder stores the bookmarks that you see on the Bookmarks Toolbar (Firefox > Options or View > Toolbars).
  • The "Bookmarks Menu" folder stores bookmarks that show in the Bookmarks menu and are created via "Bookmarks > Bookmark This Page" or via "Bookmark This Link" in the right-click context menu.
  • The "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder stores bookmarks that are created by clicking the star at the right end of the location bar.

  • "Most Visited" and "Recently Bookmarked" and "Recent Tags" are examples of so called Smart Bookmarks folders and are not real existing folders.
  • Smart folders show a list created by a query of the places.sqlite database that stores bookmarks and history in Firefox.
  • Smart folder lists show a maximum of 10 entries by default.
  • Bookmarks and history items that show up in a smart folder list are stored elsewhere in another folder and any changes made are applied to the real bookmark or history item.

That's helpful. I'm not sure what the "context menu" is. All my bookmarks have been created by clicking the star. At this point I seem to be able to create new ones without losing old ones--but they move around to places where I did not put them! I created a few today as an experiment and put them on the Bookmarks Menu. Now, three of the ones that were there this morning have migrated to the Bookmarks Toolbar list, which contains four (and don't ask me what's happened to the five that were there originally). I'm losing patience with this system!

You might want to try the "Places Maintenance" add-on cor-el mentioned in this post: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1052226#answer-704318

A context menu is the right-click menu.

Ok, will try tomorrow. Thanks, everybody.

The context menu is the menu that opens if you right-click.

If you click the star on the location/address bar then the page is bookmarked in the unsorted folder, so you need to check that folder if you haven't moved them yet to the Bookmarks Menu folder or the Bookmarks Toolbar folder.
