On some websites like Reddit.com I am usually no longer able to post in comment boxes. I can type my comment in the box, but hitting save clears the box and no comment is posted (oddly, i noticed that the comment ends up at the end of the url).

Or use the cursor to click on up and down vote arrows. When I mouse over the arrow, it changes to a hand with pointed finger, but clicking the link does nothing.

Or post photos. Normally I use Firefox 29.0.1 (which I have been using a long time and do not want to change). But the problems I mention here apply to both browsers, depending... on other things I cannot control or figure out. But at the moment, I can use links for comments etc. on IE8 (cannot update), but not on FF.

I've asked Reddit help but so far nobody has replied (r/bugs and r/help).

Hello hiker1, try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

thank you

Thanks for your reply. I tried safe mode, but the problems persist exactly as before. Any other suggestions to solve this?

If it's any help, on some links that do not work for me, I get the message at bottom left of the screen immediately above the Start button, "javascript:void(0)".

I also have access to the Console, inspector, etc if you need info from that.

Sounds that you are blocking JavaScript.

Do you have security software that might be blocking JavaScript?

Just to be sure: Java and JavaScript are different languages. To avoid confusion, see:

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

Thanks for the reply. If I had some program blocking JavaScript, how would I find it? And if this is the problem, why is it only on Firefox, and not also on IE?

I have a Lenovo T61-8892 laptop. http://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/documents/pd008989

You can open the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer). Check on the Network tab if any content is blocked and has a file size 0 (zero).

OK I opened the web console and there were no apparent blocks or zero content items listed on the various pages I visited on reddit.com. Even on some pages that had links that did not work for me. Most of the listings were 200 OK GET. The pages with non-working links had no JS items listed. In fact i don't think there were any JS listings. Reddit must use some Javascript? Does this absence mean JS is blocked site wide? or that JS is blocked in some other way? i use this site as an example of one that I have these issues with.

Finally I got around to uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox (latest version) using Cor-el's post above. Everything deleted except personal data. I was hoping that this would solve the problem, but unfortunately it has not. For ex. I filled an online report and when I hit enter the form deleted all my text. And on Reddit I cannot submit comments either, and some things like clicking on certain links does not work.

These issues do not occur on IE.
