After opening firefox, perhaps a minute later, a website called DRIVER UPDATE appears. How does this happen, and how do I stop this?
It has nothing to do with the home page which is set for Google. The long delay between opening with Google and the appearence of Windows Vista Drivers, which is a Slimware utility, is not understandable to me.

Hello,
Unfortunately it sounds like you have a virus on your computer. Try following one of these guides to remove it (I am not sure which one you are affected by, but the first one doesn't seem to affect Vista?):
- http://www.fixyourbrowser.com/removal-instructions/remove-update-windows-drivers-now-ads-easy-removal-guide/
Both have similar steps and use free antimalware software such as:
- MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
- AdwCleaner (for more info, see this alternate AdwCleaner download page)
Good luck with the removal.
