Problems since installing Firefox 32.0.3, slow, no restore last session and ....

I installed the latest version of Firefox 32.03. at the weekend and since then I have experienced problems. Shockwave flash kept crashing and all FF browsing was slow. I also noticed that 'Restore last session' was not working (greyed out in history) although the tabs open at end of previous session were reopening mostly. I decided to reset Firefox as I had lost my pinned tabs and did not want to lose them once more after setting them up. Resetting did not improve things and the final straw came this evening when I tried to download a BBC iPlayer programme to view later. The application association had vanished and when I set it up again, Firefox went manic and started opening tab after tab and ignored all my attemps to stop it. When I eventually stopped it by Ctrl+Alt+Del, there was over 380 tabs to be closed.

I am really sorry I updated to the latest version as everything was going really well with my two year old laptop and I was very happy with Thunderbird and Firefox, using Google infrequently and not using Internet explorer at all. Please help me to return to my favourite browser. Thunderbird is working as terrifically as usual and I will be most reluctant to install a later version.

12.10 am I just had Adobe Flash Player crash so there is something going on.

Did you select Firefox as the application to handle some files?

You get tabs opening endlessly if you select the Firefox program to handle a file when you get an "Open with" dialog.

Rename (or delete) the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

Hi cor-el, thanks for replying.

I figured out the problem with the frantic opening of multiple tabs last night and removed Firefox from the application association. I was then able to download programmes to iPlayer. That is now working well.

I don't want to customise Firefox yet as I'm still having problems with not being able to restore the last session - it is still greyed out in the history listing. I also had another flash player crash this morning. I inadvertantly installed version 31.1.2 of Thunderbird, when I checked to see which version I was using. It just started to install without any permission from me. I am really angry about that as I was very happy with Thunderbird and did not wish to have more problems as I was alredy peed off with Firefox problems, some self inflicted, but all after I installed the latest version. As far as I knew I had to actively download both Mozilla programmes - has that changed?

I still need help on the following:

Restore Previous Session is still greyed out, how do I get that working?

How do I avoid automatic installation of Thunderbird & Firefox updated versions? Thunderbird installed the latest version when I clicked 'About Thunderbird' to check the latest version. I was not given a choice.
