Can I select 9 websites/thumbnails to place PERMANENTLY on my new tab pages?
I'm always having to replace the sites I want displayed in the thumbnails on the new tabs. Can't I just select the 9 thumbnails/web sites that I want there permanently? My family often uses my computer and I'm not interested in their most viewed websites! (:

You can create different Firefox profiles for different users with individual icons to start Firefox in their profile with their own bookmarks, add-ons, history, etc. The only complication in that scenario is clicking links in external programs such as Adobe Reader or email software, since those may open under a different profile (or give an error that they can't open because Firefox already is running). Still, might be better for your sanity!
(Or you can create different Windows users and log off in between.)

You can pin items on the new tab, hover a thumbnail, and press the nail button.

If I hover it says to "unpin".....so, since they are already pinned, why won't they stay there??? Every time someone else uses my computer, the thumbnails change to their favorite sites instead of mine, so I have to repin my favorites.
You can change the order of the boxes on the about:newtab page and drag an item to a different tile to pin it to that position or you can remove a website by clicking the close X to block that URL.
You can drag a bookmark or history item and drop them in a tile on the about:newtab page to pin them and have your own favorites sites showing.
Changes made manually on the about:newtab page are stored in the browser.newtabpage.pinned (default = [null]) and browser.newtabpage.blocked prefs that you can check/modify on the about:config page.

You may have the solution here! No one else clicks the external links for email and such....Thank goodness! They don't want to send their emails through my Thunderbird anyway.... (: So I think I will see if I can learn how to set them up with different Firefox profiles. I didn't know you could do that. YEA!

Creating the new profiles just take a minute. Customizing them will take a bit longer, for example, installing familiar extensions and importing bookmarks. There probably is a thread here laying it all out but if nothing turns up soon, I'll try to sketch it out this evening.
They won't be importing bookmarks, as they have their own computers and just use mine when they are here, or in my husbands case when he needs my scanner printer, etc. to use, that aren't hooked up to his, or just because my computer is better....(:
So I asked them all about this idea and they really like it and they would all just be willing to sign into their own profiles and start from scratch as far as their own bookmarks, etc., in their own profiles.
This will solve so many other issues for me, not even counting the tab/thumbnails issues! So, I really appreciate you!
I looked up the instructions for this and I printed them off since you have to do all this with firefox closed....but I'm kind of unsure about the folder issues in the instructions, and it says the article isn't complete and is in need of a technical review, so I am a bit leary....

I think the technical part is straightforward (create profiles, create custom shortcuts). When you're in the Profile Manager, don't turn on the feature to prompt you for a profile.
The sharing may require a little work. A couple of thoughts:
(1) Firefox should only be running in one profile at a time. If another user still has Firefox open, you need a family protocol for what should happen when the next person goes on. Can they just Exit out and start their own profile or what?
(2) Don't let anyone else use the Profile Manager to create/rename/delete any profiles. They might accidentally wipe the wrong person's profile. Before you delete any profiles, back up all of them just in case something were to go wrong in the process.
I'd also suggest having individuals apply a lightweight theme to their profile so they know immediately if they are in the wrong one. You can choose one in advance by visiting the themes page from each profile.
