Deleted bookmarks on my old Mac now also missing on my new one

more options

I bought a new MacBook pro and decided to give my old one to my daughter. I deleted the bookmarks from Firefox, not realising this would sync to my Firefox on my new Mac. Is there any way of recovering them?

Many thanks in advance for all your kind help.

Regards.

Toni

Hi Toni, Firefox makes approximately daily bookmark backups in your profile (settings) folder.

You could first check whether your current Firefox made a backup before the deletion. Check out this article:

Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer

If you don't have any, then could you ask your daughter to check the same menu on hers? There should be a noticeable drop-off in the number of items between the day before and the day after you deleted the bookmarks, so it shouldn't be hard to spot the latest date that has your bookmarks.

She shouldn't restore them, but can send you one of the backup files (for example, share through iCloud, OneDrive, Google Drive, etc., or by email attachment).

To get to the file itself, the easiest way is:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, on the Profile Folder row, click the "Show in Finder" button. If Finder highlights an icon with a semi-random name like a1b2c3d4.default, double-click it to display the contents of that profile folder.

Then find and double-click into the bookmarkbackups folder. Each file in this folder has the date and number of items coded into its name. For example:

bookmarks-2018-10-16_6186_gibberish==.jsonlz4

After you get the backup, drop it on your desktop, and use the Restore function, selecting "Choose File..." from the bottom of the Restore menu to replace your current (built-in) bookmarks with the old set.

If you don't want to replace all your current bookmarks, you can convert the old file to an importable HTML-format file using this tool: https://www.jeffersonscher.com/ffu/bookbackreader.html and then following the steps in: Import Bookmarks from an HTML file. Imported bookmarks might integrate directly, or might be in a new "Imported Bookmarks" folder on your Bookmarks Menu.

Crossing fingers that one of these methods works for you.
