Upon setting up a new (refurbished) laptop, I was doing my Firefox settings and by chance under Options > Firefox Account > I clicked on "Manage Devices", which I had never done. When I scrolled down, there were 3 listings: My laptop/current Device My Desktop user's Firefox on Mars

I do NOT have a 3rd Device of any kind. I have a landline. I've never heard of Firefox of Mars. When I clicked on the Disconnect, it said: *They can still see your Browser Data, but it will not be synced into your account.*

I Disconnected it anyway. My questions are:

1. Who is THEY?

2. What or Who is this 3rd Device? I have no other Device.

3. What is Firefox on Mars?

I asked about this in the Firefox Community on Google Plus, here is the thread: https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/106737980223247783155/106737980223247783155/posts/DpcS3pQtk8P

Here is the Community: https://plus.google.com/b/106737980223247783155/communities/112481261289203660330

I would appreciate any help on this please!

I have no idea how to get back here to get any replies, so could you please email me?

Hi, I have only the suspicion that you were hacked at one time or another and someone synced your information from your laptop. If Bluetooth is on and/or your using public WiFi then there is always a chance. As well if you had your system serviced or left it alone while on.

Or you connected as per the 1st URL.

I would change all your passwords and if have banking info I would change that also and get a credit report if your feeling this was a issue.

No one at Mozilla Firefox has access to your information as it is password protected by you. Firefox Support Volunteers do not have access to the servers and again it would not matter as it is password protected by you.

If you need help with Sync I get you to make a Bugzilla account then have you do one more thing to get a Supervisor involved.

Thank you so much. I too feel I was hacked. The way my Devices were listed I wasn't sure you would be able to separate them as I had them on different lines, but they got pushed together. It was a laptop/current device. A Desktop. And the 3rd entry was the Firefox on Mars. Have you ever heard of Firefox on Mars? I will be getting another laptop soon. I did the Firefox sync so I could have my Bookmarks on both devices.

I'll see what the new (refurbished) laptop says when I get it. I may be back in here again. hahaha I never suspected anyone with or at Firefox. Google Plus yes. That's really the only place I go to. And as you know there are some really rotten people on there.

I'm not on a public wifi that I know of. That's one of the preferences/settings I go set. No hotspot or anything like that. I'm with at&t. I don't even want my devices communicating with each other. haha I felt being logged into Firefox sync was different. Both devices would be going thru Firefox.

And I never do ANY financial transactions online. It is just so easy to have someone hack into your computer anymore. I will change all my passwords. That's a really good idea, thank you.

Also, when I get the new laptop, I won't be using the desktop except for emergencies. Was just having a lot of problems with these refurbished laptops and down time because of it.

I guess my question at this point would be, since they are in my Firefox sync, that means they are monitoring my Browser Data on this Desktop too, right?

And yes, I would appreciate ALL the help I could get on this.

Thank you so much for your time and help.

Hi, no have not heard of Firefox on Mars. Actually do not use Sync. I would imagine some where in Sync you can name the devices so someone has named their device with that name.

Since always you could name your computer when you formatted then in XP I think you could change the name of your computer in system applets.

So It is just a name and means nothing other than silly.

Yes it can happen in public forums like google's to be hacked. As to what they got no idea of how for in. The Sync addition would be whatever you had sync'd/sharing so bookmarks .....

Now sometimes there can be ghosts in things like that entry but it does not mean they got anything.

There is nothing more can offer you in info other than use real-time protection and not to rely on scan on demand or scan every Tuesday. So Malwarebytes is one that we suggest people use for cleaning if come with issues and I personally have it installed along with A/V and a Firewall.

All you can do is try to keep them at bay.

Thank you so much for the info. I understand about the name. I've named both my computers. I have Malwarebytes. Will make sure it's up and running with updates. It should be.

On that last laptop it kept freezing up and then a blue screen would come on and tell me it had ran into a problem and needed to reboot. That it was taking down information. It also said if I gave this to a tech to give them this code. The code was: DPC Watchdog Violation

A friend told me someone had hacked into that laptop and to do a factory reset on it. It was less than a day old. I did. Then a pop up said that there was 1 file that could not be deleted. My friend told me it was probably too deep for the reset to get to.

My question on this is: I'm hoping the hack was already in the laptop when I got it. If it was could it have accessed my Firefox and computer too?

All I had on it was Firefox and my vpn. It kept freezing up and once I told my friend about the code they told me to shut it down, do not reboot and send it back immediately. I did.

And if it got into my Firefox sync, how do I get it out? As long as I'm not signed into sync I'm safe from that, right? Or can they get into either of my computers from that?

Too many bad people out there. And too many with computer skills now too. hahaha Thank you again for all your help. You are a blessing.

DPC Watchdog Violation is a WIndows error message that the SSD's (solid state drive) Firmware was not supported by the operating system and you need to go to the manufactures web site and down load a flash for the driver. If the above makes any sense.... Basically needed a new driver. Or, it was because you were running 2 anti-viruses at the same time which is a no no. Or is a Software glitch.

Do not think it was a hack.

You can just copy/paste into Google : DPC Watchdog Violation

You should probably bookmark this site : https://www.howtogeek.com/ is useful for all sorts of things but has a large section on Win10, a few new things daily.

BTW I had forgotten my password to Firefox or Firefox sync before and when I went to make another password I lost all my Bookmarks. And I had SO MANY Bookmarks. haha

I had saved a profile from Firefox that has most of those Bookmarks on it from before. Don't ask me how I did that. I couldn't tell you. hahaha How would I implement that profile?

"Have you ever heard of Firefox on Mars?"

Never, that isn't how Firefox Account / Sync names connected devices. Typically this is normal - Administrator's Firefox on WIN-7O4GP04600R = with the WIN-7O4GP04600R coming from the Windows operating system. The previous owner would have changed that thru that device in Options > Sync --> Change Device Name.

My guess is that the original owner's data was not wiped from the hard drive before that laptop was sold or handed to you. At a minimum, the hard drive should have formatted multiple times before Windows (re)-installed to make absolutely sure that the former owners data wouldn't be compromised. I would return for a refund and get a different laptop from somewhere else. Who knows what malware is on that device already, when starting out with some other persons former computer,

Oh wow That is good to know. The only antivirus on it was what came with it. I hadn't had time to add anything. It just kept freezing up. Hopefully this next one will be a good one.

Thank you for the link. I know it will be really helpful.

I thought of something and wanted to run it by you.

After some hrs of this laptop freezing up, I continued on the next day. But first I called the people I got it from. They told me to do a factory reset, which I did. That's when I found the 3 entry and the "user's Firefox on Mars" in the "Manage Devices". IIRC. If I by chance found this before the reset (I've slept since then), would have went back to it and it would have still been there.

So a factory reset was done and this 3rd entry was still there.

My questions: > After the factory reset, would/should this entry still be there?

> After the factory reset, why would it say "THEY can still see your Browser Data even though you will no longer be synced into your account" when I clicked on Disconnect?

How would THEY be able to still see my Browser Data IF this was simply the prior owners name of this laptop? And after a factory reset?

I know this may be simple to you, but it makes no sense to me. hahaha

My I also ask: I haven't gotten the 'replacement' laptop yet, but when I do, should automatically do a factory reset on it just to be on the safe side?

Thank you so much for your time and letting me pick your brain. lol Bless you

You wouldn't believe what I found!!

On my G+ account, I went into the people following me and seen someone I have no idea who it is. I will put the links to his page and a couple of his posts to show you.

KEEP IN MIND: That 3rd entry on the "Mange Devices on Firefox"

user's Firefox on Mars Last synced a month ago near Mesa, AZ United States

My question is: How creepy is this?

ALSO, one of the first things I've done when I got this Desktop and the other laptops was to go into my settings/preferences. Such as, the microphone, camera, location etc etc and turn them ALL off. Including Bluetooth.

Last night something told me to go check them as I've read people can get into your computer and turn them on. i did. THEY WERE ALL TURNED ON! OMG!

Now if that wasn't creepy enough, as I'm going down the list turning all of these OFF again, all of a sudden a guy I know (or says he's a guy) sends me a private message. He said he just wanted to say hi and to see if I'm doing ok.

AND when I clicked on the notification from him, that drop down box that opens the message up, did something really WEIRD. ONLY the box itself, not the page, looked like it went out, came back in, went out, came back in 3 times. Like it flashed off and on 3 times really fast. Almost like my computer was trying to refuse it but it couldn't.

I have Avast and nothing ever comes up. I have Malewarebites and nothing comes up. I have CCleaner and nothing comes up.

I will check out the comodo firewall.

I thank ALL of you for all your help. I really do appreciate your time and effort. God Bless you.

did you give your laptop to any computer services shops?

more options

No. It was purchased on Ebay and they are sending me a replacement laptop. When I get it and load Firefox and my vpn and sign in to sinc, then I'll check to see if there is still a 3rd entry there.

This is why I was asking if I should do a factory reset as soon as I get the laptop replacement. It will be a refurbished on too.

more options

ok can you check if you have deep freeze software?

also do these steps:

run cmd as administrator and type:

  • ipconfig /release
  • ipconfig /renew
  • ipconfig /flushdns

and restart your windows.

then install comodo firewall as soon as possible,

and install avast free anstivirus and run boot-time-scan:

when you scan your system with any security software make sure you update the database and disconnect your computer after updating.

I had just downloaded the Comodo Firewall before I read this.

Will this be a problem? Should I delete it and reinstall it as you recommended?

but first try these steps above and if it didn't help i will solve it.
