On my hp Laptop. Windows 7. Trying to stream video from USA Network. Has worked forever. Now I get an error message that says I am in private browsing mode and must allow 3rd party cookies. Not so. Streaming works on IE. What is the problem? I have Firefox ESR 52.5.2 32 bit. Cache is cleaned, rebooted, etc.

Websites often guess wrong as to why something they tried to do did not work. The reference to cookies may be the more relevant part. This article describes how to liberalize cookie settings for maximum compatibility: Websites say cookies are blocked - Unblock them.

Also, if you haven't already, could you try "the usual":

If a site is generally known to work in Firefox, these are general suggestions to try when it stops working correctly:

Cache and Cookies: When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes. If you do not see the number going down on the page, you can reload it using Ctrl+r to check progress.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Cookies" button

In the dialog that opens, the current site should be pre-filled in the search box at the top of the dialog so you can remove that site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox's Safe Mode: In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

thanks for your reply but I have tried all those and nothing works. I am also emailing with USA support team. This is the error message I get------------ "You are in Private Browsing Mode. We noticed you are attempting to use our site in a private or incognito browsing mode which interferes with cookies. To utilize this site you must be in a normal browser mode with cookies enabled."

Thank you for trying those changes.

Do you use Firefox's Tracking Protection feature? When Tracking Protection is actively blocking content in a page, a shield icon is displayed at the left end of the address bar (next to the padlock). This article has more information on how to use the shield to manage this feature and make exceptions for sites: What happened to Tracking Protection?.

Thank you jscher2000 for all your suggestions. I knew it had to be something about tracking or cookies. Actually your quip about the "padlock" made me click on that info- circle and further investigate "Permissions" . So, on the USA website after rummaging around, I clicked on "Tools" -"Page Info" - "Permissions". Everything was on "Use Default". I unchecked the Cookies line and clicked "Always Allow" (which is what the "Default" should be). Tried to watch a video and the error message came up again but the video was loading behind it. I x-ed out of the error message pop up and voila, the video is playing. Obviously this an issue with that website because after closing and going back, the error message always pops up, but I think it is solved for the time being. I will certainly come back to this line if I run into trouble again. Thanks again. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
