Firefox crashes repeatedly even after following all support steps

Hi community-

I've followed every suggested step I can find through Mozilla help pages, like safe mode, turning off all plugins and addons and re-adding one at a time, resetting all preferences, restarting my computer and so on.

I've also worked with every tangible step I've Googled in non-Mozilla forums over recent years' posts (tangible meaning most of what I see is "RAWR Flash sucks there's no way it'll ever work RAWR," not helpful).

The only one I haven't tried is the suggestion is to leave the plugin (Flash) turned off, as I can barely go anywhere I normally go online without an add, video or audio content using Flash.

I'd gladly take any suggestions, most recent crash reports are posted below.

Thanks in advance, Matthew

Presumably you have in fact already discovered that if you disable or uninstall Flash Player you have no problems. The three reports for submitted crashes were in fact hangs in Flashplayer.

You could instead of keeping FlashPlayer disabled set it as click to play, and consider installing some script blocker or Flash Blocker addon to seriously restrict what Flash Player can do.

Hi John-

Thanks for the reply. I have in fact discovered that I can disable Flash, that was one of the recommended diagnostic procedures, to disable all and re-enable them one at a time.

While I appreciate the suggestions about customizing Flash, it isn't an issue with any other browser on any of our machines. Chrome and Safari both work flawlessly (so far!) with Flash on the affected computers.

Adobe forum wasn't much help, alas, and I had already disabled hardware acceleration. The only viable solution based on your reply, then, is to set as click to play with script controls, which strikes me as a boil on the bum.

I think as a last attempt I'll uninstall both Flash and Firefox, reinstall, and if I still have the issues we'll just jump ship for another browser.

I do appreciate the time you took in replying.

Your specific problem is with Flash Player. The FlashPlayer plugin used with Firefox differs from that used with most other browsers i.e Chrome and IE both use different plugins|methods to Firefox and each other.

I understand turning off Hardware acceleration may not have helped. Did you try disabling Hardware acceleration in both Firefox and FlashPlayer. Flashplayer has its own control options available from right-click. If that works then you may find changing video drivers helps, or just leaving Flash Players setting off works.

Note also that using Firefox's Safe Mode is quick and simple method off turning off Hardware Acceleration. e.g. hold the Shift key when clicking the icon to launch Firefox.

If you do reinstall or uninstall Firefox do not remove the profile files, because you may wish to transfer bookmarks to the new browser.

It is worth noting that Firefox is trying to move away from using the problematic FlashPlayer plugin. It can already for instance play most You Tube movies without needing FlashPlayer

With FlashPlayer set to click to play you get a per site choice to remember whether or not to always allow. Addons used to block scripts likewise will have settings and probably are not difficult to use and set up.

Personally I tend to use blockers not because I get crashes or hangs but because most Flash content is unwanted adverts that then consume bandwidth and resources.

The point is Flash always crashes Firefox, which makes any and every page I want to visit which uses the plugin useless to my family - like Pandora.

The reinstall didn't work, so I guess we're off to another browser for now. I hope the news is sung far and wide when Firefox disentangles itself from Flash so we can return, it's an otherwise marvelous browser!

Thanks again for your thoughtful and lengthy reply!

There may be other things we could try. Certainly not everyone on a Mac gets FlashPlayer hangs.

When I look up the frequency of that particular crash signature it is currently showing as 88 per week. Some crashes get thousands per week. It may be useful if you have other submitted recent crash (or hang) reports.

That causes some crashes, does it cause yours to crash, if so please submit the Crash Report .

In fact a top crash for Macs does have multiple signatures mentioning dylib. A bit of a longshot but it may be connected with your issue. It appears the fix for that is in a new version of flash player 18.0.0.130 (or later) that is now available in Beta and available from

If that does not help you it potentially helps many Mac users of Flash player.

Forum notes Bug 1146036 - Adobe Flash 17.0.0.134/169 crashing on Flash thread in libGL.dylib in FF 34 and up

#c16
This bug is the #1 Mac topcrasher for FF 37 and FF 36. ...
#c78
I tried the latest Flash Player beta (version 18.0.0.144) with Firefox 38.0.1 on a Mac that consistently reproduced the crash with the comment #1 video. The beta version seems to have fixed the crash.

On the bright side, that YouTube video did not freeze or crash Firefox.

On the down side, Pandora and several other pages with Flash ads froze the browser (I turned off the HTML5 YouTube and Flash Blocker addons off for testing).

The behavior was slightly different this time; I got a banner message across the top of the browser saying that the Flash plugin had crashed instead of the browser itself crashing.

Presumably dylib is equivalent of .dll in Windows or .so in Linux. It was a bit of a longshot that you were being affected by the other bug.

If you are only now getting a page freezing with a FlashPlayer crash, rather than the whole browser hanging and unuseable that is an improvement.

Normally Firefox uses FlashPlayer in plugincontiner to sandbox the video and prevent the whole browser crashing.

  • Do you have the Crash IDs for the new FlashPlayer crashes please ?

They are obtained the same way as ordinary Firefox Crash IDs See

  • Do you normally have a lot of Flashplayer content loaded ?
Do you normally only have one or two plugincontainer processess running or dozens !

I know you say you have tried many suggestions but what about all these together

  1. Running Firefox in it's Safemode
  2. Using an brand new clean Firefox profile
  3. Using only the standard theme AND disabling all other plugins.
  4. Having a session with only the one tab open. (Easy to do from a new profile. No need to close all open tabs from your current working session)
