When I click on the bookmark star to bookmark a page I no longer get the drop down option that shows my folders.

This changed several days ago. Now when I click the star I only get the option to bookmark under "other bookmarks", "toolbar", or "bookmarks menu". Previously I could click on one of my bookmark folders to place the bookmarked page there.

It sounds like the folders all got "collapsed" and need to be expanded again. You can click the > icon to the left of the folder name to open it and show its contents, and similarly with subfolders. Does that work on yours?

Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about, since a picture may be worth 1000 words in this case:

In your screenshot you have the "twisty controls" next to the three options. When I click on the book mark star I get the three options but no twisty.

Thanks for the try though.

Could you try double-clicking the top-level category names to expand them? (That doesn't work with rename-able folders; double-clicking those opens a field to edit the name.)

When I double click bookmarks menu I get the folders dropping down but not the bookmarks below the folder list that aren't in a folder.

Firefox only displays folders in that dialog because it's a folder chooser (for where you want the current page's bookmark saved). The bookmark will be placed at the end of whatever folder you choose.

In case it's of interest:

Firefox 57+ has an optional bookmarks menu button () you can add to the toolbar. Either:

(A) Use the Customize panel (Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars) to drag the icon to the desired spot on the toolbar

(B) Use the method from Bookmarks in Firefox - section entitled: How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?

  • Click the "Library" button:
  • Click "Bookmarks"
  • Click "Bookmarking Tools"
  • Click "Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar"
