Firefox crashes on loading

FF worked fine for years--today it crashes on loading, and brings up the crash reporter. I have rebooted--no help. tried it in safe mode (using shift and the icon)--no help.

what is a location bar? how do I find "about:crashes". I already checked the detailed instructions and I am still don't even know what it is.

I responded to the crash reporter several times and did not get a crash id.
