How do I stop legitimate pop-up windows taking focus when they open?

I often visit sites which use pop-up windows for notifications and/or chat. If I'm working on another web page, for example completing a web-form, these windows steal focus and so I end up typing into thin air, or into the firefox page search box in the new window. Is there any way of stopping these windows stealing focus?
