Hello, Firefox support team!

Could you help me, how can I ultimately, once for all the time, for all the modes restrict to open new windows? The problem is the Firefox browser open new windows if the browser was closed and Im open a link from a different application (cant solve that at all). Or it was opened but somehow for some sites it opens a window instead of tabs. To be honest it can be a big and annoying issue on mac, if me app in full screen mode. And in genereal also. It is something I dont expect from app. I tried all the variants I found or learned in about:config which a connected with windows. It not helped me at all.

You can override how external links are opened via the browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external pref.

  • about:config => browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external

If this pref has the default value -1 then browser.link.open_newwindow is used. The meaning of the value of browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external is the same as of browser.link.open_newwindow

  • about:config => browser.link.open_newwindow
  • 1:current tab; 2:new window; 3:new tab;

JavaScript Links:

  • browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction
    0:divert always;1:divert never;2:divert no features

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can click the button to "Accept the Risk and Continue".

DISCLAIMER: modifying prefs directly via the about:config page is not officially supported and there is no guarantee that this will keep working in future releases or otherwise "breaks" Firefox.

Hello, cor-el!

Thanks for clarification about -1!

My settings now:

browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external = 3, So all the new external calls opens in a new tabs if the browser was already opened. That`s fine.

browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction = 1, so all the links on sites do not open any new tabs if I did not asked. That`s cool!

browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction = 0, as I understand all the java applets will work as was set in browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction.

That`s all very good, very appreciate your help!

Just one issue was not affected and I tried a different options for browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external, but with no result. If the browser is closed and Im opening external link - it will open it in a new window. My main window with all my tabs is also loading, but the link is opening in the new window with just one tab. Can the Firefox manage that kind of situations?
