Firefox 73.0 bookmarks disappeared I am running os x 10.13.6 I am unsure what to do to recover my bookmarks. The json backups have not worked correctly they are 6 months months outdated it seems no idea why this is. Export HTML has not worked for many months either. I am so fed up as I needed all the research as we speak. Its causing insane problems. Are Json files stored someone else that I can find and use ?

Screen shot of my profile is attached. If I can find a Json file backed up else where please direct me to it and I will start from the beginning again I just need the bookmarks soooo badly ASAP.

Thank you all

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

[v57+] Places Maintenance is built into Firefox.

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

You will find Places Database near the bottom. Press the Verify Integrity button.

When done, copy and post the results here.

The places.sqlite file contains your History and Bookmarks. And it looks like it is corrupted.

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Locate the above file. Then rename or delete it. Restart Firefox. The browser should then create a new place.sqlite and recover your bookmarks from the backup files. Note: Your history is not backed up and will be lost.

Hi Thanks for all your help.

I am not used to this filing system and which file needs to be renamed exactly.

I did the first step as you listed and all ok. When I completed this step the bookmarks profile folder opened as you can see.

after restarting I did rename this folder >> k3bek9ks.default too vjhgkh.default but I got an error as you can see from the 2nd image

Can you instruct me a little more exactly what needs to be renamed

Thank you

You renamed the profile folder. You need to undo this rename and change vjhgkh.default to the original name k3bek9ks.default.

You do not need to rename the profile folder, but open this folder and look for the places.sqlite file and rename this file to placesOLD.sqlite.

You can alternatively use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

You goofed up when you did not follow the instructions I posted. I said to rename/remove a file. You renamed a folder instead.

I see multiple numbered prefs-#.js temp files in the screenshot. These numbered files are created when Firefox isn't able update (replace) prefs.js likely because other software keeps an handle on this file.

There is also a places.sqlite.corrupt file that indicates that Firefox noticed a problem with places.sqlite that couldn't be repaired and Firefox created a new places.sqlite. The places.sqlite-shm and places.sqlite-wal temp files also shouldn't be there (the latter shows in the screenshot) because these temp file would normally be removed when you close Firefox. You aren't showing the time stamps of these file, so it isn't possible to see how old these files are.
