Current build of Thunderbird is unusable with Windows 10 or Windows 7. Numerous "not Responding timeouts and downloads take forever.

For months I have been struggling with the failure of Thunderbird to perform acceptably. I have tried most of the suggested workarounds (exempting TB for AV (win defender), starting in safe modes for Win 10 and TB) NONE of the these have worked. Downloading mail (gmail account) takes forever- up to an hour. Any other actyions that occur during the downloading process result in a "not responding". I want to understand what is the direct cause of the problem and what is planned to eliminate it. I am looking for a lasting solution that is not a workaround. As it stands now I can no longer use TB for email. Just too unreliable and slow. Give me my TB back...Please thanks mjgrota

Your experiences are not common and no known single cause has been identified.

Some things have been identified and it sounds like you have tried at least some of them.

I certainly do no wait an hour for gmail mail... I get my hundred of so emails from this forum via gmailin a few minutes each day.
