Thunderbird only shows a notification on the first new message

When I receive an email, I get a notification from Thunderbird. However, if I then receive a second email, no notification is displayed. I do not receive any notifications until I read at least one of my new messages. Then the next new message I receive will display a notification.

I am using Thunderbird 52.5.2 (32-bit) on Windows 10 Pro Version 1709 (64-bit).
