there were several error requests on this subject. Thunderbird shows error Keine Rückmeldung or no response when retrieving and responding mail. I am using IMAP. And this seems to be the problem. If I disconnect from the internet I don't get any NO RESPONSE error message as Thunderbird does not try to communicate with e.g. Gmail. Often file repair was suggested which did not make a change. Error messages continue to apear. Is there a way to stop Thunderbird from checking back with the registered email accounts for some time so that this what seems to be some time out is not initiated or is there a better solution? I don't think it has to do with Windows 10. I also tried to deactivate Bitdefender but this neither solved the problem.

Can anybody help?

Try to start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled. - Win10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode

Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode. - https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode

Does the problem go away?

christ1 thank you for your kind help

I tried to follow your instructions but cannot see any result. Do I have to stay in safe mode?

if I have to stay in safe mode it does not help me as I want to use windows in normal mode after going to this process. I guess what I think would help is to find a configuration which keeps Thunderbird to not IMAP mail for e.g. 30 minutes unless I click 'get messages' manually

thunderbird seems to have a problem with getting mail while I am typing a mail or click the incoming mail when it is not completely downloaded. That is when Tunderbird blocks. After some minute or two it automatically recovers and functions properly till the next messup / no response error message

I tried to follow your instructions

Great, but a pretty useless statement. Did you start Windows in safe mode or not?

I ... cannot see any result.

When starting Windows in safe mode, do you still see the problem or not? Can't be that hard to provide precise feedback.

Do I have to stay in safe mode?

No, that's just been for troubleshooting.

I wrote I followed your instructions.Accordingly I started windows in safe mode. The problem prevailed.

ok. Good I dont have to stay in Windows safe mode.

then I started Thunderbird in safe mode. Or better, I tried. It looks thunderbird modified the safe mode and now instead asks you to disable all extensions. That is at least what I understood. Tried, but that didn't change the problem either.

You're not supposed to check the box to permanently disable all extensions. Just start Thunderbird in safe mode while Windows is running in safe mode as well.

after operating Windows and Thunderbird in safe-mode the problem prevails. I assume the problem is generated when any of the mailboxes - gmail, gmx, etc. - are either contacted by thunderbird or the boxes send (push) messages to thunderbird. If at the moment of downloads from the mailbox I use Thunderbird before the message download is terminated thunderbird freezes: 'no response' error message - ( because the interaction between thunderbird and the gmail/IMAP blocks thunderbird for a couple of minutes.

After some minutes Thunderbird automatically unfreezes and I can use Thunderbird normally till it freezes again due to communicationg with an email to check download or deal with the message pushed from the emailaccount.

The only method I found to avoid Thunderbird freezing is by disconnecting from the internet, e.g. write messages and then connect the internet again. While the internet is disconnected, Thunderbird creates no problem and does not freeze.

I also tried to disable the mail push function on the level of all mailboxes. This did not help either. The problem is that as soon as Thunderbird is or tries to communicate with any mailbox via IMAP protocol, certain use of Thunderbird freezes Thunderbird during the downloading/synchronizing process. After some time Thunderbird automatically unfreezes again.

Typically anti-virus software is causing the symptoms you describe. Windows safe mode disables anti-virus software, so presumably that isn't the problem.

See if this article helps. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems

unfortunately the suggested article does not help as it deals with slowness, it does not deal with no 'no response' as the title says:

Slowness or high memory usage in Thunderbird, fo any reason, can be frustrating. To fix slowness, you must do some investigation.....

The article is pretty generic. Follow the instructions.
