Hi. I sometimes get the cannot connect/problem loading page when using Firefox, but a refresh of the page always fixes it.

My question is what happens if this error occurs after I attempt to log into an account? Is my information safe? Can my log in information be compromised? Do I need to change passwords?

Sorry for all the questions, but this is a concern for me. Thank you in advance.

No, you are safe.

Try deleting your cache and deleting the cookies for that site. New browser might need new cookies. Cookies hold information about what browser you have and you no longer have the same one.

I had deleted the cookies and cache before this occurred. It's not an easy event to recreate, I was concerned that it may have compromised my log in name or password.

Could you explain what happens when you get a "cannot connect" error when you're attempting to log into a website? What does the browser do with the password and user name, does it get sent anywhere?

Can anyone help out with my second question please?

What security software do you have?

It is possible that security software (anti-virus, firewall) is causing the problem.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and remove the cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Clear the cache:

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove the cookies" from websites that cause problems.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

I don't think it has to do with the security software. If this is just an inconvenience, I don't mind it because refreshing the page always loads it. It's only when I need to log into one of my accounts and get this error do I worry. My second question about this still wasn't addressed though.

Could you please explain what happens when you get a "cannot connect" error when you're attempting to log into a website (after you have typed in your password and all)? What does the browser do with the password and user name, does it get sent anywhere?

It's been a week and no one seems to be able to answer my question.

I fully understand what may be causing the cannot connect error, but I'd like to know what happens when this error comes up after typing in a user name and password to log into a website. What does Firefox do with the name and password when it cannot connect?

Actually something was given re: security software and it was rejected even though there are know issues with several.

If after typing in your info and Enter. It's rejected it goes no where. That's it, the end.

If wanting to try to fix the issue please  : Please : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/export-firefox-bookmarks-to-backup-or-transfer and https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles then https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings TEST....... If no issues then Extensions which need to be added back in 1 at a time and tested ..... Or it is your Profile : Make a new one and test ...: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Thank you for the reply, I was concerned that that login info could have leaked.

This cannot connect error is very rare for me, so when it happened after a login attempt it was a bit worrying. Again thank you for your help, no further assistance is needed.
