Firefox comes up with no tabs and won't go any further, Can't even close.

It asks if I want to restore a previous session. If I choose one, the tabs are displayed, but no page will come up. If I say "don't restore", then I can enter and URL, but all I get is the "connecting" message. I can minimize and maximize the window, but I can't close it. I must shut it down with the task manager. I have tried downloading the latest install and updating Firefox, but nothing changes.
