How can I configure Thunderbird to use MacType?

I have just upgraded from Thunberdird 24.2.0 to the latest 38.2.0 and noticed that the software is not using anymore MacType (a font rendering application) to render the UI nor the e-mails. MacType works correctly with all the other software installed, and in config editor I see that direct2d is disabled.

Is someone able to point out how to configure Thunderbird in order to render its UI and content with MacType? Is there any new component preventing MacType to work, and how can I disable it?
