How do I configure thunderbird for google mail?
i can't seem to configure Thunderbird to send and receive mail from my Google account. Can anyone please help me?

Yes? I'm still looking for an answer. I attempted to configure Thunderbird according to the info given in the Google help files but it doesn't work. It doesn't appear that Thunderbird even looks in the Google account. For now, I do have an AT&T account and there are no problems getting and sending mail from there.
Did you try adding the Google account in Thunderbird? Did you enable POP or IMAP in your account settings on the Gmail website?
In Thunderbird, File|New|Existing Mail Account.
Did you consider answering christ1's requests?

Yes, I did both: However, when I go into my Thunderbird account settings, it says my Google account is a "special" account. And, now, I can't delete or remove it. The "Remove Account" option is grayed out, unlike my AT&T account , which is in bold letters.
Thunderbird has a built in account normally called Local Folders and this is referred to as a Special Account in Account Settings. So how on earth did you get it to look like a Google account? It doesn't have anywhere to set up server settings.
Rename it to Local Folders then try adding your Google account.
