Start.Search.US.com comes up as home page even if restore to default. Can't get rid of it.

Didn't even do anything. Home page changed on its own. Tried a fix that was suggested on-line but that did help. Instead now have more "add-ons" and Yahoo has become the home page instead of my desired google although when bring up Mozilla always goes to the Start.Search.us.com first.

In order to change the default search engine or the order of search engines in the top right search box in Firefox, please perform the following steps:

  1. Move the mouse cursor inside the search box at the top right of the Firefox window and click the down arrow next to the provider's logo.
  2. If you would like to select another search engine, simply pick the engine from the dropdown list.

In order to change the order of the search engines, do this:

  1. From the dropdown list, select Manage Search Engines....
  2. In the upcoming window, you have all your search engines listed. To change the order, simply click one search engine and then select Move up or Move down from the buttons on the right side in order to change the order of the search engines.

For problems with your Firefox search provider or home page caused by third-party software or Firefox toolbars, first try the suggestions here: Remove a toolbar that has taken over your Firefox search or home page

If you still have problems or if you believe that you are infected with malicious software ("malware") I suggest that you visit a reputable forum specializing in malware removal instead of trying to follow instructions on various websites you find on the Internet that may run you into trouble. See Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware for some recommendations.

Hello Everyone,

This thread was recently brought to our attention. Anyone who would like to remove the Search.us.com toolbar, and reset their Firefox search engine, homepage, and tab settings to Firefox's defaults can easily do so by downloading and running the free ResetBrowsers.exe utility from http://support.search.us.com/uninstall.php

Please contact us via the aforementioned page if you still need assistance.

This does not help it at all. I did what has been mentioned but it was not removed. I am going to download any programs that will remove this toolbar and I will blog about the steps to remove it. This is seriously ridiculous. If I do not want your toolbar, do not bother me to use it!

Hello MoeAmine,

Search.us.com sponsors free software downloads so they can be free. The software publishers that we work with are required to offer Search.us.com's free services as completely optional to the end-user. If you feel that you installed Search.us.com as part of a free software download, please reply with the web address of the download so I can have them audited for compliance with our disclosure policies.

I apologize that our free ResetBrowsers.exe utility did not work for you. If you are attempting to reset Firefox's search and homepage settings, you can do so manually by editing Firefox's user.js preference file with a text editor such as Microsoft Notepad (included with Windows):

Verify that the Search.us.com toolbar add-on is removed from Firefox (http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/disable-or-remove-add-ons). You can then edit Firefox's user.js file located in:

Like the Windows "YOUR_USERNAME" part, the "wd69kojw" part is unique to your installation of Firefox so it'll look similar, but the characters will be different. Remove the following lines (they are likely the only lines in user.js unless you are using Firefox in an enterprise environment) from the user.js file, and save your changes:

user_pref("browser.newtab.url", ""); user_pref("keyword.URL", "http://search.us.com/serp?guid={a bunch of letters & numbers}&action=default_search&k="); user_pref("browser.startup.homepage", "http://start.search.us.com?guid={more letters & numbers}"); user_pref("browser.startup.page", "1"); user_pref("browser.newtab.url", "file:///C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Local\TNT2\\pinnedSearch.htm");

You should then be able to enter about:config into Firefox's address bar to Reset its browser.startup.homepage, and keyword.URL Values.

Please email contactus at search.us.com if you need additional assistance.

P.S. Please also feel free to blog about the aforementioned details to make this information easier to find for others.

Thank you!

Thank you for your help. I have spent around two hours in the morning trying to figure out how to remove it (after having the toolbar installed for 2 weeks).

I really don't have anything against you but you do not expect users to have a positive experience when you force them or to use something they don't want. And let me tell you something, the program that I downloaded did not give me any option to choose to install it or not, and I chose custom installation.

Anyway, this is my article I promised, I will add your steps so it will be beneficial for other users. I highly recommend changing the attitude of marketing this toolbar, it is a neat toolbar with nice search results but again, people don't like being forced.

Thank you!

Hi MoeAmine,

The free software downloads that we sponsor are not allowed to "force" their users to install our free services. If you feel that you were forced to install our free services without consent, please provide us with the web address(es) of the software that you installed.

Thanks for the blog post. I see that you linked to a Malware Tips article. People should know that they do not need to pay for any third-party software or services to remove Search.us.com. In the event using the Search.us.com uninstaller fails via Windows Control Panel, we provide a free ResetBrowsers.exe utility to completely remove our free services. If all else fails, we provide free support via email: contactus at search.us.com. Our representatives will never ask you for payment or any other sensitive information.

We have attempted to provide Malware Tips with this information, but they seem more interested in promoting the software and services listed on their site.
