How can I disable that ugly black menu to the left the screen?
I use "google" as my homepage and I do not like clutter either on my desktop or on my homepage.
How can I disable that black menu at the left of the home page?
Dell technicians have tried, but cannot eliminate it. Usually one is able to "hide" menus.

Google changed their homepage. They replaced the narrow black menu at the top of the screen and replaced it with the wider grey bar. When you click on the Google logo that black menu opens on the left side. Sorry I don't know how to close that menu, haven't seen that page myself, just read about that change yesterday.
Try a Google group for help with that. not a Firefox support issue.
Another suggestion is to use the default Firefox homepage - about:home
You can try to clear the Google cookies to see if you still can get that older page.
I think it's a new Google feature. If you are signed in to any of the google services, you may get that menu on the left depending on the service and the others who are not signed in get the horizontal strip on the top. Maybe AdBlock Plus or NoScript will be updated to address this.
