Cookies and exceptions always deleted

I would like Firefox to remember exceptions and store specific cookies that I need for the Microsoft authenticator, and other two-stage logins. Whatever setting I choose (untick delete cookiex and sitedata, assign websites to manage exceptions etc) upon closing Firefox everything is deleted, always. This means I can't use any authenticator to remember me when I want it to do so.

I used a third party cookie extension (Cookie AutoDelete) to whitelist some sites and it worked perfectly fine until an apparent recent update by Firefox. I am on Firefox 101.0.1 on Mac.

Any ideas?

Hi estulz11, First of all, you can't save cookies with a Private Browsing window or with Always Use Private Browsing Mode selected. Otherwise, I check Delete Cookies and Site Data When Firefox is Closed. In Manage Exceptions... I add the sites that I want saved. Further down the page, under History, I select Firefox Will Use Custom Settings For History. Select - Remember browsing and download history Remember search and form history Clear history when Firefox closes In the Clear History Settings I select everything except cookies. Lastly, just in case, I use the Cookie Quick Manager extension and export a copy of my saved cookies.

many thanks for your reply, that was helpful. I finally managed to keep the info in Firefox that I wanted, but I still had to do a bit of try and error.

I have aplied the settings as you suggested, including using the Cookie Quick Manager, but it still deleted everything. I figured out that I need to leave the Site settings unticked in the settings for clearing history, and that made the difference. Otherwise I have it all as you suggested.

You can use these steps to make a website recognize and remember you.

  • create a cookie allow exception with the proper protocol (https:// or http://) to make a website remember you

You can check that you aren't clearing important cookies.

  • using "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" keeps cookies with an allow exception
  • using "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear cookies clears all cookies including cookies with an allow exception you may want to keep
  • clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exceptions for passwords and other website specific data
  • Settings -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Exceptions"
  • Settings -> Privacy & Security
    Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history":
    [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" -> Settings

many thanks for your instructions. It seems that the key is to keep the site data; my error was to remove these when Firefox closes. This makes it clear now, and I'm happy that it works.
