I consider myself to have a decent PC. AMD FX 8350, 16GB RAM, 480GB SSD. I've been plagued the last couple weeks with Firefox locking up. I have to kill it from the task manager and reopen it. I'm using version 47.0.1. I checked using about:addons-memory and shows the highest as Firefox with 29.9MB. As it is about to crash, in the task manager, Firefox is using 10-15% CPU, memory usage increases about 8MB per second. An example website, if I go to RT.com, and scroll through the comments, it starts at using about 720,000k in the task manager. It rapidly starts increasing until it hits around 2,700,000k which is usually in a couple minutes. At this point I have to wait until the browser responds again, or kill it with task manager. Only addon running is ad-aware, and addons-memory, it registers between 4-5mb during this time, addons-memory 800k. There was an update a few weeks ago, like to think it started just after that. I've done the complete "reset" to try and fix, didn't make a difference. I've also tried changing to different adware addons, to see if it was related, didn't make a difference. Only happens on websites with active comments I've notices so far. Like where the comments update while watching the threads. whether its rt.com, or yahoo.com, anything like it.

Ideas?

Memory issues can take time and effort to troubleshoot and it is not always easy to find solutions.

Try creating a new additional Firefox profile for testing purposes. Then run Firefox using that new profile with all plugins set as never activate and in Firefox's safe mode. Do you get problems in that configuration or not ?

Note with 16GB RAM & a multi core processor you will have no problem running simultaneous instances of Firefox. So you should be able to use your ordinary working profile and a second instance of Firefox in the new profile at the same time. Start the new profile using the -no-remote option, from a command prompt.

Try the new profile initially on just a single website but with as many tabs as you want. Note that you may use about:memory to track your memory leak.you can measure and save the results maybe every 10 minutes, then compare them later using about:memory's Dif function. that should confirm the memory leak.
