what happens when you press CTRL+V

control v pastes the characters of the link

it seems that it doesn't look like a clickable link in the composed message body but I sent myself a test and it appears to be clickable to the recipient.

however, the "Paste Hyperlink" button on the tool bar does nothing so this appears to be a bug

perhaps you could post an image showing that button. I have not got one and have never had one.

I do see there is an add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/pastehyperlink/?src=ss is that what you have been using?

Basically a hyperlink in Thunderbird does not become one until you either save the message as a draft or send it. Makes editing the text so much easier. It take a little getting used to after outlook express. But I much prefer it now

If you want to insert hyperlinks properly. Use the blue box on the edit toolbar beside the smiling face to insert a link. Type in the text you want to display like "Link to St Johns photos". Paste in your link below (Ctrl+V) works there or you can right click for a paste menu. Typing it in is for the birds. So when you send it looks like

Link to St Johns photos

when I compose an email, my tool bar says: Send - Spelling - Attach - Security - Save - Remove Hyperlink - Paste Hyperlink.

The Paste Hyperlink worked great until I upgraded to 45.0 - now nothing happens

So it's an addon and may not be compatible with TB45. Try Insert|Link (on the menu) instead.
