Firefox 33 hangs on exit when running on MacOS X Yosemite. The same applies to Thunderbird 31.2.0.

This is happening on two separates machines, one being a iMac 21" (Mid 2011) the other a MacBook Pro 17" (Late 2011). This is happening since both machines were updated to MacOS X 10.10 (Yosemite). I need to terminate a hanging instance of either Firefox or Thunderbird by selecting the 'Force Quit' functionality (right icon in Dock). Neither program can close itself, even when logging out the current user. I also tried running in safe mode in Firefox, no luck. Any ideas?

Have you tried these troubleshooting steps? Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix

Thank you. Yes, I went through these steps, unfortunately with no luck.

Additionally it seems that the places.sqlite file is now corrupt for whatever reason. Removing my complete profile solves the problem, but that's not really an option, as rebuilding profiles isn't that straightforward.

This behavior has happened on separate installations with independent (non-synced) profiles, so I assume it is profile related in general.
