I am unable to get FF 63.0.3 to open .FITS image downloads with my preferred tool 'ds9', even if I specify the tool's path.

I'm using Firefox 63.0.3 on Fedora 29 Linux. When I download an image in .FITS format (standard in astronomy), I get the "What should Firefox do with this file?" dialog box, and select "Open with". The suggested application is Gimp, which is useless for my purposes; I want the astronomical image viewer ds9, a descendant of SAOimage. The dropdown menu does not offer ds9 as a choice, so I select "other", which opens a "Select Application" dialog box. This also does not list ds9, nor is it in the "View all applications" list, so I go to "Find new applications" which offers me the same selections in fancier format, but also has a search box. I put the path to ds9 (/usr/local/bin/ds9) in the dialog box, but the choice is not offered -- I get "No applications found" anywhere along the path.
This used to work. What seems to have happened is that a design decision was taken to create a special menu of Firefox-approved 'applications' and limit the user's choices to these alone. Is there any workaround, or am I stuck with downloading files I don't want to save and laboriously opening them by hand in a separate application? This is driving me crazy, or more accurately, even crazier.

I'm on Fedora 31. Firefox was recently upgraded to 71.0 and I find a weird pattern in trying to open links from applications - possibly related to Slack:
If firefox was initially opened following a link from Slack, I can open other links from Slack, but trying to follow links from other applications (IBM Lotus Notes, or running "firefox URL" from a terminal window) fails with a "Firefox is already running" message.
If I open firefox from the desktop applications menu, the reverse happens. I can open links from Notes and a terminal, but following links from Slack fails.
I tried reinstalling firefox and slack with no success. Today I tried going back to an earlier version - firefox-70.0.1-4.fc30.x86_64.rpm - and everything seems to be okay.
It seems like something changed in firefox 71 that doesn't play well with Slack.

Since one week there are some changes in the address bar. Suddenly there is a menu "page actions", and a magnification icon. And a reader view button.
What scares me is that these changes just suddenly happen, not with an upgrade. How can this happen? Does Firefox check somewhere online?
And they keep coming back! I have no control over them! That is what scares me.
While these are nice additions, I do not want them. I want to tab to the next filed directly.
I try to get rid of those things but no matter what I do they come back. How can I shut these down for good?
I have been a Firfox user since the beginning and I love it!
Any help would be appreciated.

I am an admin for hunderds of websites. I log in to them using "admin" as login name. Since today I get a list of all the logins with that name from all the sites when i want to enter my login. It used to be just one login: the one for that site, and after that the right password.
Please correct this, or maybe you can show me how to turn this off.
In the past I only had to push the down-arrow button in the login field to enter the login, then do tab tot get to the password field and there the password was and I could log in. Now I have to type "admin" while being distracted by all the hundreds of unwanted suggestions.
This can be a handy feature but not for me, it was working perfectly.
This seems only to happen on new sites where I add a password, and keeps acting that way on the new site.

I did not change my account password. I changed nothing on the other machines, but it synced the new install's blank(well, the Getting started) bookmark set. WTF?! There's 5 years of bookmarks missing now.

I'm running Firefox 71 on Linux. I notice that when I load a page into a new tab (either from middle-clicking links, or entering URL manually), Firefox UI is unresponsive for about 2 seconds. During that time, I'm unable to switch tabs--either by clicking, or with Ctrl+Tab. I tried restarting with all add-ons disabled, but the problem persists.
The problem disappears if i were to create a new temporary profile, though. So it's clear that something in my current profile is screwed up, but not sure what. Other things I've tried: quit Firefox, I vacuumed all `.sqlite` files in my profile; cleaned up all the cached images (not site data, though).
I'm keen to continue using my profile rather than create and setup a new one. Any help to trouble shoot this problem is appreciated.
Thanks.
