Cursor hangs and freezes during autosave in Gmail when composing or replying to a message

Hello!

I reinstalled Windows 7 64 Bit Ultimate on a new SSD and migrated all data to a fresh install. I installed Firefox 27.0.1, and am having a new problem that I have never encountered.

I am typing this support question in the same browser, and the typing is fast, responsive, and overall normal.

However, when I go to Gmail, and compose a message, the autosave feature seems to go crazy, and saves every minute or so which I think is normal. The not normal thing is that when it does so in FF, the cursor freezes for about 5 seconds, and I don't see any text as I type. Eventually, all the letters in the sentence will catch up (about 25 seconds later), and invariably one or more is missing.

For troubleshooting, I have tried composing messages in IE 11, as well as the latest Opera Browser, and both work fine.

I have multiple YouTube accounts, and hence I prefer to use two different browsers for YouTube, so that I am not automatically logged in and out every time I want to send an email, etc.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and/or know a solution? Again, it is consistent only with Gmail in Firefox. Gmail works fine in every other browser (I won't use Chrome), and every other function (such as typing this email post) works fine in FireFox.

Hi chapmattman,

A new compose window in gmail sends a request to autosave after a pause in typing or after a given interval. Please try this test:

  1. Open up the gmail and open Web Developer > Debugger
  2. IN the Debugger that popped open, click on Console
  3. Open a compose window by the button or the "c" shortcut and just start typing
  4. See if you notice any errors when it starts to pause
  5. If you also click the gear and enable persistent logging, you can click on the network tab and watch the server requests as you type. Here you will see any delay visually when it stops you from typing.

If it is just a delay it could be the connection to that server. If there are any errors while you wait for the screen to display the typing definitely let google know. If you see other errors, we are happy to help.

I tried the debugger, and Firefox crashes when I have debugger running and try to compose a message in Gmail.

Opera and IE 11 work perfectly for the same function.

Here is the crash information:

Thanks edward, but I am looking to continue using the browser based experience. I may just have to go to IE 100% since Mozilla just hangs. Too bad I liked a lot of the FireFox experience.

For now I've switched to Aurora. It doesn't really solve the problem of Firefox 27.0.0.1 working, but it does work and suits my needs.

Best, chapman
