Suddenly I can't download files from sites. I get a detailed message which begins with "Adobe Reader cannot show documents in the browser." I used to just hit download on a site that had an article, or menu, or something I wanted to download and the download function would begin. I can't do this anymore. How do I fix it?

Handling pdf files has changed not long ago. You are on apparently on an old version (fx14) of Firefox. You are apparently using OS X 10.8 and that will run the current Release of Firefox (fx23.0.1 soon to be fx24).

Please first of all update Firefox then post back

Could you try disabling the Adobe Acrobat Plugin on the following page:

Tools menu > Add-ons > Plugins category

Then in the following dialog, select a different viewer or application to handle PDFs:

Firefox menu > Preferences > Applications

Allow a few moments for the list to appear, then type pdf in the search box above the list to quickly access the setting.

Does that solve it?

Even before the answer came I somehow realized (but hitting different sites) that I need to upgrade. Since I've done that and figured out where the download button is (I hope I remember this) it works. Thanks for solutions so promptly.

Disable the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) and use the external Adobe Reader application or Preview application instead.

PDF files may be found under entries like Portable document or Adobe PDF document or Adobe Acrobat Document.

  • Firefox > Preferences > Applications > Adobe PDF document : Use Adobe Reader
