this sounds like a problem possibly caused by adware/malware on your pc. please go to firefox > addons > extensions & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and do a full scan of your system with the security software that you have in place and different other tools like the free version of malwarebytes & adwcleaner.

You are likely having a program that protects browser settings or /and re-download it. Go to control panel and uninstall all the stuff installed in the last days you are not 100% certain of. Then scan for trojans with Hitman Pro Then Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings Reset firefox settings again. If still problems, scan for fbdownloader with anti-malware programs,

I have a similar problem. I have run Malware Bytes, Spybot, Norton, reset firefox, uninstalled programmes in control panel, deleted strange things in start up. However I am still getting fbdownloader making itself the default homepage and search engine inside firefox whenever I open it from start up.

I have noticed this line in help> trouble shoot page

keyword.URL http://search.fbdownloader.comsearch.php?channel=sfuk205&q=

And I can't seem to get rid of it, even after resetting FF. Any help please?

If you do not keep changes after a restart then see:

Check for the presence of a mozilla.cfg file in the Firefox program folder to initialize some prefs.

This also involves the presence of a .js (JScript) file, probably in "defaults\pref" folder, that specifies to read this mozilla.cfg file.

If you have .js files apart from the channel-prefs.js file, that sets app.update.channel, in the defaultspref folder then open this file in an editor like Notepad and please post its content.
Also please post the content of the mozilla.cfg file.

If you have this mozilla.cfg file then best is to do a clean reinstall of Firefox and remove the Firefox program folder.
