old bookmarks
Why is it so complicated to import my old Firefox bookmarks? I have a harddrive from my old computer (march 2012) in a ext hard drive enclosure which is attached to my new laptop via USB, and I can NOT find a simple way to import my old bookmarks. I wasted several hours today trying to do that. I have bookmarks-2012-02-07.json and I have places.sqlite. I want to >include< which ever file has my old bookmarks with the existing new bookmarks file. That’s it! Please don’t tell me to convert it HTML, it didn’t work.

Firefox unfortunately cannot merge in bookmarks from a backup file (.json format). It can only completely overwrite what you have. So I think you need to do it in 4 steps:
(1) Export your current bookmarks to an HTML format file;
(2) Restore the old .json backup file;
(3) Import the HTML file you created in step 1; then
(4) Organize the imported bookmarks (back) into the desired location among the restored bookmarks.

For #2, see: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer. You will need the "Restore File" item at the bottom of the Restore menu in order to get at your old .json file.

There might well be an add-ons that smooths this process, but finding and testing it might take longer than doing it manually...

Export your existing bookmarks. Then restore that JSON file, then import the bookmarks.html file that you exported.
JSON files need to be restored, and all existing bookmarks are replaced.
HTML files are to be imported, which appends existing bookmarks.

You can also do this with a second profile and restore the bookmarks in that second profile.
If you have the two instances open at the same time then you can copy and paste bookmarks from the bookmarks manager (library) of the second instance and paste them in the bookmarks manager of the Firefox instance with your current Firefox profile.

You need to start the second instance with the -no-remote switch.
Thanks jscher2000, that worked. It wasn't a simple fix but thankfully knowing my way around web browsers (I go back to the mid 1990's when I was using Netscape), I got it working. I'll have to do some editing, but that's not a big deal. Thanks to you and everyone who responded!
