How do I specify a helper application ?
I am running Firefox 3.5.15 on Fedora Release 12. I am somewhere on the web and click on a link to a text file of some sort. Up pops a dialog titled "opening myfile.ext".
I want to select "open with" ... and then specify an editor of my choice.
I do not know how to accomplish this specific step.
If I was running IE on Windows I guess I would click the drop down arrow, select other, a file open dialog would open, I'd navigate to c:\Program Files\MyEditor and highlight "Mychoseneditor.exe", click open and that would be it.
Maybe I might not know where Mychoseneditor.exe was (or that it was an exe for that matter) ... but I'd know to go to the desktop and look at the shortcut to Mychoseneditor.exe which would give me the path.
This isn't Windows, so I do not understand what to do. I know I select Other, the "Chose Helper Application" dialog opens, ... now what ?
I know what editor I want to use, but that isn't really the point.
Rather then just saying I want to open this file with gedit, and someone telling me to click FileSystem on the left (assuming that's part of the actual answer) and then go to /bin/blabla/programs/whatever/gedit and select ged, I think it would be better for me to see the bigger picture.
Next week it will be a jpg file and I'll want to open it with BobsPicView. I'd then be back here asking how to do that.
I guess I am asking how to I know where gedit is, and I guess, really what is it ? Is it gedit, gedit.exe, gedit.bin ?
