High CPU/Memory usage on Exit

I'm running WindowsXP (with Task Manager open). When I exit Firefox the 'Processes' tab in Task Manager shows Firefox running at 90+ percent (sometimes 100%) of CPU with a high Memory use count. This condition persists for more than two minutes then drops off to lower levels and disappears over the next minute or so. Sometimes I can shorten this period by going to 'Applications' tab in Task Manager and 'Ending' the Task (Firefox continues to show as a running application; although the screen has returned to my desktop). If I try and re-open Firefox before all Firefox processes have been eliminated from the Task Manager, I get the error message that "Firefox is still Running" and it fails to restart. Is there any way to speed up the exit process?

I have also been experiencing a number of Script failures of late....these issues may be related.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
