How can I find empty space on bookmark toolbar to customize it, and how can I make it show icons only if it doesn't react to "icons" only? .

I can't find any 'empty space' to control click to customize the bookmark toolbar. Also, I can't get the bookmark toolbar to show icons, only. It will change to text, however. In that case, how can I shorten the text titles?
