Hi !

Firefox asked me again to create a new profile. Third or forth time within a month or two. Nothing serious, I have to admit, takes a few minutes to recover bookmarks, reset duckduckgo as default search engine, etc., but why is it happening? Version 87.0, Windows 10, 64 bit.

And while I'm here... I use to download a lot of webpages, for information purposes, it's easier than to bookmark them all. Doesn't work correctly for a while now, they are not saved as webpages, but as something resembling html-format (or however to describe it)... Still working with Edge and Opera, so it must be a Firefox issue. And after each update Firefox was reset to French language automatically one or two days later, this also does not happen any more. I'm neither English nor French native speaker, so again, not a real problem, but why is it happening? or rather not happening any more?

Just curious... Thanks in advance for any hint Best regards Michael

Does Firefox give a reason why it wants to create a new profile folder as this shouldn't happen normally ?

Are you still using "Save Page As" to save the page as "Web Page, complete" to save the main page with a .html file extension and additional files in a connected "xxx_files" folder ?

What kind of data is the 'resembling html-format' content ?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Hello cor-el,

thanks for your reply !

No, Firefox does not give any reasons for creating a new profile. Happens after starting Firefox. The strange look of downloaded webpages: actually, right now it seems to be ok again. (Yes, I save them with "save page as... complete webpage".)

About a week ago I came across this article: https://www.microsoft.com/security/blog/2020/12/10/widespread-malware-campaign-seeks-to-silently-inject-ads-into-search-results-affects-multiple-browsers/ Several times I had experienced strange search results. Instead of spending a lot of time trying to understand and correct things which are slightly beyond my understanding, I had decided to delete Firefox and download and install it from scratch. Then Firefox asked if I would want to try a "refresh" instead of deleting it. So I refreshed it. Don't remember exactly whether this last new profile creation demand came directly after refreshing Firefox, don't think so because then it would have been obvious...

Anyway, at this moment everything seems to be fine. As I have some stress with my small company, I don't want to spend energy with too many other things, so let's leave it as it as for the moment... and hope that it stays like that...

Thanks again for your effort, and have a nice weekend Michael
