I recently updated Firefox, and it has stopped working completely. The address bar seems to be disconnected, and no bookmarks will open either. Not even settings will load. I had a second browser, and even after removing and reloading firefox, the problem remained.

Some problems occur when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet. {web link}

Unfortunately that is definitely not the issue here. Linux does not always need a firewall, and so I could turn it off to test this. No difference.

Thank you for that link. I did the Safe Mode restart, as well as all the other steps (including re-installing Firefox!). I guess the problem is with either the operating system or perhaps Chrome, the other browser. Is it possible for either of these to have this effect on Firefox? I am using Midori now, which is actually running better than Firefox was...

Did the methods work for you or were they not helpful is resolving the issue that you are facing? It could be with something with the OS, check where your application logs are stored to see if Firefox or the OS reported any errors there.

To see if it's Firefox crashing, you can access "about:crashes" to submit any crash reports which could help resolve your issues.

The other browsers should not affect Firefox in any any.

If you wish to continue using Firefox, you have the option to downgrade it. Instructions here: Install an older version of Firefox

The methods worked, but did not resolve my issue. Firefox continued to ignore everything in the address line. It is as if you cannot hit enter, or use the mouse. Bookmarks similarly made no attempt to load.

I think the Firefix upgrade was only a security patch, but I am willing to try the downgrade. Will I loose all my passwords and bookmarks?

There were no crash reports in Firefox...would sending you the Troubleshoot page help?
