Now that I have removed adobe flash player, videos will no longer play. What can I do...?

I have to say that this has been the most frustrating issue that I have been unable to find any kind of help with.

I am running W7 on this laptop (I do not know more than that), even W10 on my desktop, both with the most updated version of mozilla.

I have removed the adobe flash player, and now I cannot get any videos to play, like on CNN and other various sites. I just get the spinning wheel of nothing. It seems that only you tube is working, barely.

Am I missing something, is this open html5 crap supposed to just take over and everything will be okay.

Maybe someone, somewhere can post a layman's explanation on what is going on. If there are issues, how to fix them. I don't need anymore information telling me how to remove because it is dead. What I need is what is replacing it, how does it work, and where and what can I do to fix issues.

Searching for help here on this subject is just tedious. I get over 3000 replies, or what ever they are called here, but just nothing on an explanation of what is changed and or how it works, more like doesn't work.

What do I need to do in order to be able to watch/play videos online.

Any help would be very, very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Where are pictures not loading? If you share a URL, break it before the top level domain by typing a space before .com, .org, .gov. That will avoid a delay during moderation.

Any difference if you set FIrefox to No Proxy:

  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

In the search box at the top of the page, type proxy and Firefox should filter to the "Settings" button, which you can click.

The default of "Use system proxy settings" piggybacks on your Windows/IE "LAN" setting. "Auto-detect" can lead to a flaky connection. Try "No proxy".

Any difference?

Your first paragraph, I do not understand what you are asking/telling me. You want me to share here, a link to the site I am having issues with? And you want me to leave a space in it so it doesn't show as a hot link? Is that correct? I am not sure that will work, meaning trying to look at media on that specific page, as one has to be a member in order to click on media to make a thumbnail into a larger picture.

https://diecastcrazy. com/

As a media sample, here is a link, where before "no proxy", the media would open into a pop up window where I could use an arrow on the side of that pop up window to scroll thru the pictures, but since the death of flash, the picture will not show in that pop up window.

https: //diecastcrazy.com/threads/a-team-caliber-roush-racing-ford-fusion-employee-promo.424800/#post-2459394

On "no proxy" when I click on the media, the one single picture opens into a new tab, and the picture scrolls into view from top to bottom, but just stops at about a quarter of it.

With "no proxy" the page seems to load faster, but I still have issues when I try to load a pictures.

I am still having issues with videos, absolutely nothing will play, but for you tube, anything like on CNN or BBC News, no video will play, it just shows as a spinning wheel of nothing, when I click refresh it says: "Code1 something happened and this file will not play", or something to that effect.

It doesn't matter which site I go to, there is an issue with it loading or media playing.

At this point I have about had it with this/these issues.

I don't know how it works at mozilla, but whomever is in charge, if there is any one, needs to get going at get these issues fixed. Never had any of these kind of issues when flash was still alive, now that it is gone, it's just one issue after another.

Regarding the forum, you're right, I can't see things there.

If they were using a Flash-powered viewer for their photos and haven't replaced it with something else, then that feature won't work.

For videos, do you want to share the error messages from the Web Console? I understand you are concerned there could be sensitive information in there. It's up to you which lines you want to share.

So If I went through all those lines, error codes etc, you just want the ones that have the word video in it?

Not sure this is going to help, but this was the only 'video' failure that could find:

Cannot play media. No decoders for requested formats: video/mp4 hawaii-lava-dome-newsource-jr-orig.cnn Cannot play media. No decoders for requested formats: video/mp4, video/mp4 hawaii-lava-dome-newsource-jr-orig.cnn

There is a whole lot more "script" errors and failures, if those are what you need?

Sounds that you do not have support in the Windows OS for playing MP4 files.

That is not what I needed, I don't have W media player installed. I use something else, as it's with site provided media that I cannot play, not files that I already have. I also never use mp4 files that I own/have in my possession, I use mkv files.

That being said, I did find what I needed, so it would seem at least on the CNN website (the test site I am using), to play online media. I will have to check other sites as I go along.

On this page:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/media-feature-pack-for-windows-10-n-may-2020-ebbdf559-b84c-0fc2-bd51-e23c9f6a4439

There is another link to something called:

"Web Media Extensions"

Which takes you to here:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/web-media-extensions/9n5tdp8vcmhs?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

Once you have it installed a pop up window will appear saying that you have "installed the product", you can close it or leave it.

At this point open a new tab, go to a site of your choice, that you were not able to play their media content.

Once there if you see the pad lock symbol picture that is on the left hand side of the the search box, click on it and in "allow permission" use the drop down menu to "Allow audio and Video".

Test by clicking on a video file that is on the particular webpage. That should work as it did for me. Depending on the speed that it loads.

You can get to more detailed information if you click again on the pad lock symbol, where it says in a colour (mine shows as green) "Connection Secure", click on the arrow head (the less than) symbol to the right of it. Once there it will give you a drop down window of security information for the particular site you are on.

At the bottom of that, there is a bar that says "More Information". Click on that and in a pop up window it will give you a selection of 4 tabs "General", "Media", "Permissions" and "Security".

Click on the "Permission" tab and it will give a list of "Use Default" permissions. Under "Auto play" it will show that you have selected "Allow Video and Audio", as it is what you had done previously. All else I have left as is.

I have not gone to each site that I was having issues with playing their content, but my own educated guess it would be that one would have to do this for each site that one was having the issues with, but at this writing I have not tested that.

As for the issue of not being able to see pictures, I am going to try the "HEIF Image Extensions" , that is on the page of the first link that is provided. My guess is that it would be the same kind of process as mentioned/done above.

If this helps anyone, I am happy for you, now I have to go and send this to my Mom, as I think she is still having the same problem.

Kind regards.

Did you only install the Web Media Extensions? It's strange that your Firefox needed a download to play OGG/OGV files. Support for these is built in to Firefox. It could be disabled using preferences -- that was one reason to do the new profile test (reply 1383173), to rule out a problem with settings.

You could go into about:config and filter using media.*enabled to see whether there are any modified preferences that might be related to audio or video.

Yes, that was all that I installed.

It was not disabled that I know of. I went to Adobes site and used THEIR removal tool.

I did try that profile test and it didn't make a difference. I had the exact same issues on both profiles.

I can go into aboutconfig, but there are quite a few "media" results, most show more than just the word media, you will need to be more specific in what you want me to be looking for.

Try using the entire match pattern I suggested:

media.*enabled

Among the matches, anything bolded and with a reset button at the far right end of its row has been modified. I'm not saying you should change it, I'm asking whether anything is modified.

Yes, I used that search term, there are still quite a few lines that have media enabled. I was looking at the true/false.

The symbol on the far right are all the same, I am not sure how it is supposed to look "embold-ed" as each line is in a different shade/hue, one white and one more very light blue.

Okay, it sounds like none of the preferences has been modified. You can see the difference by double-clicking one to toggle it from true to false. Then double-click again to switch it back.

I see.

Okay, yeah, so that's it I guess, just need to get the picture issue on the diecast car website sorted then.

I should mention, that I still have not found anything that will help with the W7 laptop, I still cannot play any videos.

I am guessing that it is something similar, no permissions to play mp4 files, but I can't find anything to be able to fix it, as all W7 support is now gone.

Any Ideas, other than upgrading to W10..

Thoughts..?
