Firefox very slow (vs Edge)

Long time Firefox user here - been on from the start (about 2005), and don't want to switch because I love some features like the Panorama View extension, Context Search extension etc, and it's always been a great browser.

Recently though (not sure if it's just recently, or I've only just noticed), it's so slow. I tried a brand new profile, no extensions, no settings changes, and it's the same. Example loading times:

bbc.co.uk/news Firefox: 14s Edge: 2s chess.com Firefox: 19s Edge: 4s chess.com play vs computer Firefox 38s Edge 2s

https://youtu.be/er9jBysL0vEFirefox vs Edge (YouTube)

So it's not my profile settings or extensions.

BUT, I tried it on a different user profile on the same computer (Switch User from the Windows Start menu), and it's fast!

Why is this, and what do I need to do on my user account to speed Firefox up (keeping my same Firefox profile)?

Thanks in advance.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

No, unfortunately Safe Mode does not help. Nor does doing a Refresh (I just tried it).

Really seems to be something about my current Windows account, as like I mentioned, if I log into a different local user account, it seems fine (fast).

I don't want to have to set up a new Windows account to try to fix this if at all possible - it always used to take days to re-install Windows and configure my software, find passwords, download licences etc and would be a major headache. Not sure I even know how to do it on Windows 10.

But I have no idea how to find out why Firefox is being slow, but other browsers are not.

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Secure websites. Is the problem still there?

Just for kicks can you give this tool a try to see if it helps. Google dns benchmarks and you should see it from GRC's | DNS Nameserver Performance Benchmark. I recently changed to Cloudflare from openDNS and I very happy with their performance.

I'm not sure what happened but it seems to be running fast again now. I did a few things, none of which seems very likely to relate to a cause:

  • Ran MalwareBytes, which turned up something it thought contained adware (download assistant) in the Recycle Bin
  • Did a simple reboot
  • Removed an MS Teams uninstaller from the Task Manager that was hanging around
  • Tried reboot of Windows in Safe Mode as suggested, which didn't work since I couldn't remember my password (normally use PIN), after which I had to do a hard reset by holding the power button down for 10 seconds as it was booting to a black screen
  • I'd also created a new profile using Refresh but then moved everything back into the new one from the "Old Firefox Data" folder that is created, since it didn't make any difference

So I'm not particularly convinced that it won't recur, but fingers crossed. Thanks for the suggestions.

I also found that after Firefox was running fast again, Logitech G-hub wasn't recognizing my mouse any more (and had no version number) so I had to uninstall that completely and reinstall, but it's probably unrelated.

Hey, this is kinda random but few configs could optimize your FF a lot.

Type in URL bar about:config and it should open a settings menu. Following two tweaks should optimize the browser and make it snappier.

layers.acceleration.force-enabled set it to true gfx.webrender.all set it to true

it will basically use more GPU for rendering and make everything faster. Chromium is optimized to do all those things by default. Let us know if you gained speed.

Cheers!

Just unmarked my "solution" as done, as Firefox is doing it again.

Aware that it may be something to do with Windows rather than Firefox itself, but I can't stand it any more.

I'm going to have to move to a different browser after 15 years. Sorry guys.

Same here.

I use Linux (Ubuntu 20.04) in 2 laptops and the performance is same: near to 10s to load a page when Chrome gets <1s.

Not sure where is the proplem, Linux? DNS? FF? Not caching?

Just found the problem...

I disabled IPv6 resolution and Voila, problem solved.

Go to "about:config" and change "network.dns.disableIPv6" to true

For more info, check https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-cant-load-websites-other-browsers-can

Hope it helps!

Thanks for the suggestion. Didn't help in my case. I don't think it's related to any settings in Firefox since with everything reset, the problem is still there. And on other Windows accounts it seems fine, so it's probably some Windows setting for me; problem is, I don't know what.

Thanks, tried this, didn't help. I don't think it's a rendering issue, but how long it takes to load each thing on the page.
