Help... long running scripts have been crashing my browser for months now.

Long running scripts have been a constance daily occurrence every time I use my desktop computer since seems like forever. This is the latest one: chrome://calendar/content/calendar-base-view.xml:198..... Not sure if they are all calendar scripts because I'm not always given any script info, just a non responding error message sometimes. I asked for help once before and tried what was suggested, as best I could, but I still have the aggravating problem just as often as ever. However, admittedly I'm not all that computer savy and am more of a user than I am a fixer. My browser is up-to-date and I also reloaded a new one recently. Add-ons are also disabled. Any help at all will be appreciated, thanks.

The message: chrome://calendar/content/calendar-base-view.xml:198 means there is an error on line 198 of that script.

Do you use a calendar add-on or website?

more options

Hi Fred.... I use website calendars, Google. I have add-ons disabled. I disabled the few I have several weeks ago but it hasn't helped any. Although I get the calendar errors, I also get a lot of "not responding" messages that doesn't tell me why it's not responding.....

If there is still a problem, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Did this help?

While you are in safe mode;

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. Since this feature was added to Firefox it has gradually improved but there are still a few glitches.

Thanks for the advice Fred. I will do as you suggest and will get back to you as soon as I have some results. On a different note, I don't know if they are add-ons or not or if they might be connected to my problem or not, but I do keep the Bookmark and the Menu tool bars activated, where the Bookmark toolbar contains many links including a link to my Google calendars. Thanks again...

Could it be that this is about the Lightning calendar and that you are on Thunderbird?

Not on computer much last few days. I don't know about the Lightning calendar in Thunderbird, except that I have never used it. But I tried your suggestions above and although I haven't used computer much since, so far so good...

Will do Fred. I plan to be back on it again fairly often starting again tomorow. I'm laid up right now with a bad back so I have been wasting my time away between Facebook and a couple of military history sites I visit that's full of articles I enjoy reading... I've suffered this problem with this browser for several months now. Started to dump it several times for a different one. But I didn't. Just kept trying to fix it, and kept cussin'..

Hey Fred. Just wanted to give you an update on my problem. Although it's not happening quiet as often as it was before I followed all your suggestions, I still have the aggravating Firefox non responsive and long running script problem. There is definitely something that is causing my problem because if all Mozzilla Firefox browsers were working like mine no one would be using them. Luckily I'm not using mine for business purposes or I would already have been forced to make a change. I've used Internet Explorer and Google's Chrome in the past but prefer FireFox and really have no desire to return to either one of those. But it sure would be nice to be able to use the net without having long freeze ups and reboots everyday while using FireFox.

I also wanted to say once again thanks for taking the time to try to help me get my browser smoothed out and working properly again. But unfortunately it's looking more and more like FireFox may never again work properly for me...

Can you post the full error messages you are getting?

I came across this; . JavaScript Errors Windows

JavaScript errors may be caused by a corrupt registry entry. Use a good registry repair program. You can also try this;

Click on the start button (windows logo on Vista). In the search field type cmd. Right click on that icon then select Run as Administrator.

One of these commands should work on your system.

regsvr32 jscript.dll regsvr32 VBscript.dll • Source http://answers.microsoft.com

(A message should appear confirming that the process was successful) You may need to restart the PC after you are done..

Hey Fred. I don't guess I'm smart enough to follow your latest instructions because when I type cmd into run it takes me straight to the black screen and doesn't give me an option to click on an icon or Run as an Admin. As far as error messages are concerned, the only one's I ever see are concerning a long running calendar script, plus I get the a non-responsive message at times. I But I did go in and disabled the Lightning calendar and I don't "think" I've had a long running calendar script since. But I have several others that the browser doesn't give me the option to identify. My browser froze up today and took 15 minutes before it started working again. It wouldn't even let me use the Task Manager to clear the current tasks... Then after it unfroze it was so slow I had to reboot. But a corrupt registry key might indeed be causing a java script problem which is causing my browser problem. But unfortunately, so far I haven't figured out how to check it out then fix it if necessary... But I'm gonna keep at it...

Follow the instructions I posted.

I followed your registry instructions Fred and my system accepted the first of the 2 files you sent then I rebooted my computer. So I never tried the other one. But the one I loaded didn't make a difference.

On another note I have noticed the longer my computer is on without shutting it off or rebooting it the more prevalent my problem becomes. Also if I leave my computer on all day or all night with my browser idle with any tabs open, when I go back to it I start out getting so many "Mozilla isn't responding" and "long running script" messages that I am forced to reboot my computer. Then if I use it several straight hours during the day or night it gets so slow and freezes up I end up having to reboot while I'm trying to use it.

So is it possible that something could be running in the background using up most all my memory and that's what isn't allowing my browser to work correctly? That line of thinking may be laughable to those in the know but at this point with my limited knowledge I'm grabbing at straws because I know I don't have the ability to get this aggravating, hair pulling, wall kicking, problem figured out on my own. :)

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Secure websites. Is the problem still there?

My desktop computer has been on and in safe mode now for 24 straight hours Fred. Out of that 24 hours, I used it 7 hours last night, left it on all night with 3 open tabs and have used it off and on for the last 13 hours today (Saturday). It is smoother and faster than it's been in a long time plus so far I haven't had any Mozilla non responsive nor long running script error messages, which has really been nice considering the aggravation I've been going through because of the number of slowdowns and freeze ups I've been receiving along with those 2 error messages for so long. If Facebook videos and Gif file plus videos on some other sites worked I'd just leave it in safe mode. YouTube videos still work but videos on some other random sites and those in most news and sports articles aren't working in safe mode. My question is; how much longer do you think I need to run it in safe mode?

This means another program on your system is causing issues. As a test, disable your protection programs.

Are you sure that this is about Firefox and not about Thunderbird ?

OK Fred. I disabled my anti virus program and will leave it disabled and leave my computer on until morning then see if I my browser is so slow that I'll have to reboot like usual plus still giving me Mozilla non responsive messages...
