On 2 different PCs with Win7x32 and Win7x64 after update Firefox to 63 all tabs icons disappeared from previous session? This issue was on FF52 but Mozilla quickly resolve it by update.

Yahoo! Thank you very much!) This addon help me. It have special option "show favicons". I am export my previous session in txt file and import(paste txt) it again in new Firefox window. This addon restore session without loading tabs content but reloading favicons. This operation - restoring 500tabs take only 1gb ram and 1minute!) https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/my-sessions/

Current Firefox versions store the favicons in favicons.sqlite. Older Firefox version stored the favicons in the places.sqlite database that stores bookmarks and history. If you used a profile with a recent Firefox version and revert to Firefox 52 then you won't get the favicons.

You can also check some prefs on the about:config page.

  • browser.chrome.favicons = true
  • browser.chrome.site_icons = true

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

Thanks for quick reply. I am updated from 62. I have only browser.chrome.site_icons = true

Hi 12sunflowers, do you mean on the tabs restored from a previous session? Apparently it is normal now for the site icon not to show on a restored tab until the tab is activated.*

That makes it harder to recognize at a glance which of the inactive tabs are from which sites, so hopefully someone will come up with a workaround.

* EDIT: As discussed later in the thread, after you activate/load an old tab brought forward from an older version, Firefox 63 should display the site icon on that tab when you restore your session in the future, whether it is the active tab or not.

After all previous updates all icons from previous sessions was appear. Icons disappeared only after update 62>63.

Its bug? Or cache problem?

As far as I know, that is normal now.* I am not aware of a workaround that doesn't involve loading all of the tabs (which slows down startup significantly if you have a lot of them).

I am sorry, but its not normal. Here same bug in FF52, that resolved by quick update. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1345456

ps If its normal, why if i reload all tabs, favicons appear again, and do not disappear next restart?

Firefox 63 has new code for site icons on tabs. I don't understand the details, but tabs that haven't been loaded recently enough before installing Firefox 63 may have their icons flushed from the session history file. Once they are loaded in Firefox 63, the new storage method is used going forward.

So "normal" was the wrong description. "Normal for (some? most?) old tabs you haven't loaded in Firefox 63 yet" would be more accurate.

I am understand. So this is not bug like in FF52, right? And if in future this "new code tabs" do not change, favicons do not disappear again?

But its very not comfortable. I have about 500tabs. How i can reload only favicons without reloading tabs? Because reloading 500 take all my PC resources.

It seems like a one-time change, but I have not tried to understand why it was needed, so I can't be sure.

I think we are all in a similar situation. I am just bringing them back when I activate the tabs myself.

In theory you could manually edit a session history file (after decompressing it) but I have no idea what information Firefox needs to see there to show the icon instead of hiding it, and editing hundreds of entries in that file is likely to lead to an error that breaks it and prevents it from restoring. I do not think it's worth trying.

Thanks. So only one way - bruteforce, reload all tabs? On my second PC i am successfully reload 500 tabs, but it take 14gb ram and 3-4 minutes.

You could search around and see if anyone else has a better workaround. There may be discussions on Reddit or Mozillazine if you do not find an answer here.

That sounds like a problem with favicons.sqlite Current Firefox versions no longer store favicon data in places.sqlite, but use a separate database named favicons.sqlite.
