Scrolling with synaptics touchpad doesn't work properly

I've been having problems with two-fingers touchpad scrolling in firefox on my laptop (acer aspire v7-482pg) for a while. Scrolling doesn't work properly (or on some pages such as gmail it doesn't work at all), and there is a small square that appears around the cursor for a brief moment. The problem occurs only with the touchpad and only in firefox. Using a mouse works as expected.

For some reason, the problem disappears when I connect my laptop to a second monitor. In this particular case, scrolling with the touchpad works very well.

I've tried disabling hardware acceleration but it doesn't solve the problem. The problem seems to be related to the following bug (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1345355 ), however I'm still having issues with this in Firefox version 62.0.

One thing that partly resolves the problem for me is setting layers.async-pan-zoom.enabled to false in about:config. Scrolling works more often and no square appears around the cursor. However, scrolling is very rough, not as smooth as when connected to a second monitor, and it doesn't always respond to scrolling.

How can I fix this issue? Thank you for your help.
