Download feedback

On desktop, there is ZERO feedback that a download has started. This is a core UI element and shouldn't be relegated to add-ons or keeping the download window on screen at all times. Most users have a hard enough time tracking where a download was saved, let alone not knowing that a download even occurred to go looking for a file.

A user shouldn't have to mess with the browser innards to get reasonable application feedback (and a tiny progress indicator isn't reasonable feedback).

If you want to make feature suggestions, you can use any of these (depending on whether you want a suggestion box or a discussion):

They tend to get lost here in the "emergency room."

Hi,sorry having issues with that. You can go to Customize then up to the Download Arrow and click on it to unhide it. It does have animation that shows.

As Volunteer Support can not do anything about the issue please go to the Menu --> Help --> Submit Feedback.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Pkshadow, that's a handy tip. I don't see that it made a difference, but it's a feature I wasn't aware of. Also, thanks for pointing out this is the wrong place to post developer questions.

Really I'm talking about the default browser behavior. A user shouldn't have to mess with the browser innards to get reasonable application feedback (and a tiny progress indicator isn't reasonable feedback).

FFus3r, disabling extensions has no effect. Someone at Mozilla apparently thought silent downloads were a good idea for general adoption.

I'll consider this thread closed.
