Browser 49.0.1 will not show up on my computer running XP SP3.
I am running XP SP3 and Firefox just updated to 49.0.1 and suddenly....NO Firefox!
I can see that the program is running in the Task Manager Processes but the application does not run on my computer. If I try to load it again, another instance will show up in task manager processes - each time it is about 48,000K.
I have tried:
shutting down/restarting ending process/process tree
And I have tried all steps for a clean install with and without uninstalling the application:
-uninstall in the add/remove utility (will not uninstall) -deleting installation directory (will not delete, says it is in use by another person or program) -deleting temporary Firefox data (I could accomplish that) -deleting Windows Firefox prefetch (I could also accomplish that) -re-installing 49.0.1 (yes I can install, but to no avail)
I also tried an online tech support that tried to fix things in safe mode. Futile, and then the computer got stuck in safe mode and would not boot into normal. The computer had to be set for a week ago, which gave me Firefox back at version 48. But even that would not open because of something about XPCOM (sorry I am unable to remember the exact error message).
After that I once more uninstalled and re-installed 49.0.1. It's in my programs. But still nothing. I'm exhausted.
Do I just give up on Firefox? Any other possibilities?

hi mhalpert, i have seen one or two similar reports by other users after the update. at the moment i think that looking for similarities of the affected systems is the most promising way to find a workaround/solution for this issue... could you do one of the methods at http://www.ghacks.net/2014/02/06/create-list-installed-windows-software/ to produce a list of all installed programs on the system and paste that into a reply here in the forum...?
You may have corrupt xulstore.json or Localstore.rdf file.
Close Firefox. Open your file browser to this hidden location:
- Mac: *~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/
- Linux: *~/.mozilla/firefox/
- Windows: %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\
- *C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\
Locate the above files. Then rename or delete them. Restart Firefox.

So I have attempted to run the command line in order to send a list of my software. As per the instructions on the link you sent, I brought up: wmic:root\cli>
then I typed in /output:c:\users\Melissa\softwarelist.txt product get name, version, installlocation
This returned nothing, so I'm sure I'm doing something wrong -- any suggestions?

-- that message usually indicates that the the Firefox program folder had become corrupted, so reinstalling was the correct next step. However, I don't know why Firefox 49 does not run on your system. If you need to reinstall Firefox 48, you can find a link to the server that has all of the old installers in this article: Install an older version of Firefox.

Look for your computer system. Then open your computers file browser to that folder.

You need an SSE2 processor for Firefox 49.0 and above.
i think firefox would refuse to install/update on older unsupported systems...
hi, mozilla just released an update to firefox 49.0.2 that should fix a problem that sound pretty similar to what you've described. you can download this new version from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ to see if it works for you too.
