How do I restart firefox with the same tabs and windows?

It isn't in the File or Tools menu. I get nothing when searching help. Yet FF knows how to do it, say when updating extensions.

I know I can do it by saving my session, exiting, restarting and restoring the session But is there a single command to do all that?

Thanks. --David

I am attaching a screen shot showing how to select automatic session restore just above the Home Page setting where it says "When Firefox starts".

With that set, you can restart Firefox manually by exiting using the menu --

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

-- and then starting Firefox up again.

If you want an actual one-click restart button, you can check for something on the Add-ons site: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/

You should be able to select it just above the home page setting on the Options page. This article has more info: Startup, home page, tabs, and download settings.

Does that work?

I went to Tools->Options and I see "General", "Search", "Content" etc. There is a home page option under "General", but I see nothing about restarting there.

Please note -- I am looking for a *command* to restart ff, not any kind of option.

Thanks -- missed that.

Still no "restart" command, however. That would be handy especially given ff's tendency to big down after a while (especially with a lot of tabs open -- but many tabs is ff's big advantage over Chrome, IMHO). But this is pretty close -- just one additional operation to perform.

Hi David, if my Firefox reaches that stage where it's teetering on the brink of lockup, with blacked pages and long periods of (not responding) on the title bar, I can usually exit it normally using the following key sequence, even if the toolbar is unresponsive:

Alt f x

Or in other words:

activate menu bar > File > Exit

Hopefully you won't need that often!

Thanks. But when ff gets locked or nearly so, then it doesn't respond very well to the keyboard either, right?

I just tested shutting ff down from the win task manager, with the new startup setting. Restart then takes it to the session recovery dialog, which seems appropriate. And it's much nicer than before, with the recovery dialog appearing on top.

Using the Task Manager crashes Firefox, so in that case, you would get either an automatic restoration or, if Firefox can't automatically restore on the first try, the "This is embarrassing" screen. I try to avoid using Task Manager if I can...

You can restart Firefox via the 'restart' command in the Developer Toolbar (Shift+F2; Firefox menu button or Tools > Web Developer). You can type restart in the command line of the Developer Toolbar and press Enter to execute the command.

You can press the Tab key to accept autocomplete suggestions.

There are also extensions that can restart Firefox,

Got extension -- Restartless restart -- seems to do the trick without using any real estate.
