Without the Tab Mix Plus add-on, you might have to modify a preference in about:config, but I am not sure of that because I have not researched it. You can configure TMP to open a new tab next to the current active tab.

I give 5 Stars to TMP. For me, TMP is essential because I spend much time on the Internet on many different web sites, and it saves me much time when I am surfing the web.

I use anywhere from 3 - 40 web sites in 3 - 40 tabs in up to 4 tab rows at the same time. TMP makes it very easy and keeps it highly organized.

Classic Theme Restorer, another of my 5 Star add-ons, works exceedingly well and pairs most excellently with TMP.

You can only open a link in a tab next to the current tab. If you click the plus or otherwise open a new tab (e.g. middle-click a bookmark) then this tab is always opened at the end unless you would use an extension to change/override this behavior.

Ok, I downloaded this TMP but I did something, don't know what, resulting that the feature i previously had - minimize tab when I click on it - is gone now. So maybe you can help me. Can I set up in this TMP to minimize tab when i click on it?

Now come to think of it I wonder is there some guide for TMP somewhere? I think I know what certain functions do and if I want to enable or disable them, but it would be nice if there would be some website where I can read about it and which will reassure me that I do understand options there correctly.

1. Install TMP

2. Open the TMP Options window via 1 of 3 methods:

- Firefox menu/Tools/Tab Mix Plus Options

- TMP button in Firefox Toolbar

- about:addons/Extensions/Tab Mix Plus/Preferences

3. In the TMP Options window, click any of the 6 tabs at the top of the window, such as the Links tab.

4. In the bottom-right corner of the Links window or in the bottom-right corner of the window of any one of the other 5 tabs in the TMP Options window, click the question mark " ? " link to open the extensive Tab Mix Plus Help web site: http://tmp.garyr.net/help

5. The TMP Help web site includes a comprehensive Table of Contents and detailed information about how to use and configure the numerous settings and options in TMP.

6. Recommendation: Pay close attention to the detailed user and configuration information. Experiment with the different configuration settings and user options to observe the effect and benefit of each setting and option. In my experience, TMP is very stable. The user can experiment with all of the options and settings without risk of creating problems in Firefox or any other add-ons.

7. After Installation of the add-on, TMP automatically adds a "Tabs" tab to the Firefox/Preferences window, and this "Tabs" tab has important user options including the following:

- "Open links that open in a new window in: New Window, New Tab, or Current Tab".

- "Don't load tabs until selected"

- "Hide the bar: Never, When I have only one tab, or Always".

8. Recommendation: start with the configuration settings and user options in the TMP Options "Links" tab and work your way through the settings and options in each one of the 6 different TMP Options tabs. The first option at the top of the Links window is "Open links that open in a new window in: New Window, New Tab, or Current Tab."

9. Another very useful TMP user option: TMP Options window/Events/Tab Closing/Closing current tab/When closing current tab, focus: First tab, Left tab, Right tab, Last tab, Last selected tab, Opener/right tab, or Last opened tab.

10. The words in the TMP Options window can be short and small, but, after you become familiar with the effects of each setting and option, the various settings and options provide big benefits and conveniences for the informed TMP user.

Thanks for that @zondermunz but neither did you or the help of this plugin answered my initial question. How to inimize active tab by simply clickin on it. Maybe I do have to get use to this add on, maybe I do have to play a little more with the settings, but the thing is that as much as I would like to, I don't have all day free to tinker with those settings. I just need specific answer, to one, two questions and that's it. So at the end of the day I won't be using this add on. Thanks for the information though:)

There's no settings to configure and it works straight of the box. It's lightweight and doesn't have a bunch of options to carefully check like TMP does. It's also restartless which means you don't have to restart Firefox to start using the addon.

Don't be afraid of addons. As long as you install lightweight ones, you shouldn't be worried about them impacting the performance of your Firefox. This one is 11.2 kb which is very small.

But it still involves you using keyboard shortcuts and a bit of work just to open a new tab next to the current one.

Yes, Firefox has a built-in setting (browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent in about:config) to automatically open tabs next to the current tab but it only works in a very limited scenario. It only does it when you click a link inside the current tab. It will open that tab next to the current tab. But if you click the New tab button or press Ctrl+T, it will always add a new tab at the end of all the tabs. This addon will fix that.

People have complained about fixing this within Firefox since 2009 but there's really no progress on that: Bug 528005 - Provide ways of opening new tabs next to the current tab
