I have gone into preferences to no avail. To clarify, how do I get rid of the banner appearing constantly and causing my list of emails to jump around as it appears and disappears?

As you know, support for the older generations of Macs was dropped from Firefox, to improve the user experience for those users with more modern hardware. Unfortunately this does make the situation difficult for users such as yourself.

Fortunately you can disable the Yellow warning Bar very easily. 1. Open Firefox. 2. In the Address bar, type "about:config" (without the quotes). Press Enter 3. Accept the Warning 4. In the Search bar on this page, Search for "plugins.hide_infobar_for_outdated_plugin" (without quotes). 5. Double click it to set it to "True" 6. Restart Firefox.

Please keep in mind that running such an old system does leave you at risk for security breaches in your Operating System (Which hasn't received a major update since August 2009), Firefox (which will no longer receive updates), Flash, Java, Quicktime, etc. (all the same story). You can read Firefox no longer works with Mac OS X 10.4 or PowerPC processors , which summarizes the issue with PowerPC, and provides a community updated version of Firefox (it still does not support Plugins).
