There are no search engines in my search bar and adding new ones doesn't work.

I'm running Firefox 4.0.1 on Windows7 64-bit. In this and in previous Firefox versions, there have never been any default search engines loaded in my Search Bar. When I try to add any, for example by visiting the Wikipedia site and selecting Add "Wikipedia (en)" from the Search Bar drop-down, this fails to install Wikipedia in the drop down. When I select Manage Search Engines... from the drop down it does take me to the Manage Search Engines List dialogue but this is an empty list. I've tried Reset Default Search Engines in Firefox Safe Mode but this didn't change anything.
